Day 4: stop stressing about numbers and letters! Think about it What kind of conversation can you have with your friends using only letter names, numbers, colours and shapes? Right? Don’t get me wrong - learning academic concepts is very important but when a child is just learning to talk functional word categories is where it’s at!... What does that even mean? Great question! That’s categories such as objects, actions, locations, and greetings. We want to choose words to help our children get their wants and needs met to decrease frustration and to encourage back and forth interaction. Right? Here are some words to try: Hi / bye Help More All done Up / down In / out Open / close And of course - Mama / Dada! I hope that helps take the pressure off - they’ll learn those concept in time! I’d love to know - what was your child’s first word? Tell me in the comments! And don’t forget, please like, comment, share, or save this to help more people see this information

As caregivers we are often very in-tune with our little ones and able to predict their needs But that doesn’t give them any reason to talk to us when you think about it Ok - so what can you do??... Here are three tricks to give your child a reason to communicate: 1. But favourite items in view but out of reach 2. Put objects into a clean container that is hard to open 3. I have a question for you....When you play with your child do you go get your own toy? Often times we sit down to play with our LO and try to jump into what th...ey are playing by using the toy they have possession ofand thenthey walk away! Your child may walk away because they dont want to give up their toy during play. TO IMPROVE YOUR PLAYTIME INTERACTION, TRY THIS INSTEAD: If your child is playing with a truck, go get your own truck. If your child is playing with a ball, go get your own ball. If your child is playing with a Little People character, go get your own character. Name the toy you will most likely be grabbing TWO of today... to give this a try and let me know if the playtime interaction improves!!! Reposted from The Speech Sisters

What exactly is counts as a word? Likely more than you think... Mom is are often guilty of thinking the babies are saying mama and calling their name very early on but for a word to be considered a word officially It needs to be said:... 1. Intentionally 2. Consistently 3. Independently And they dont need to sounds like adults words! In fact - they likely wont! What counts: - word approximations eg ba for ball - signs eg More or please - exclamations eg uh-oh - noises eg vehicle sounds beep - animals sounds eg moo Looking for a vocabulary checklist for you little one? Message me with send the list and Ill get that checklist right to you.

Do you want to know the number one question I get asked? HOW MANY WORDS SHOULD MY CHILD HAVE? This is a challenging question to answer. Why? Because there truly is a RANGE of how many words a child should have at a given age. I love this info that I found from @speechsisters. They will briefly explain it in this post but you will need to go to the BLOG for a detailed explanation...This is a MUST READ blog for ALL parents! Link in bio on Instagram @speechsisters ... Do you want to know why we decided to provide the number of words a child should have across a range? After researching multiple resources (see references in blog), there seems to be a discrepancy between what many speech-language pathologists believe is appropriate versus what pediatricians (AAP), Mayo Clinic, or even the CDC provide. We want to bridge the gap because the truth is that none of the above mentioned professionals or institutions are in the wrong. Speech-language pathologists often state a child should be saying 10 words by 15 months, 50 words by 18 months, and 200-300 words by 24 months! Whereas the AAP, CDC or Mayo Clinic state that a child should say 10 words by 18 months or 50 words by 24 months. So why the big discrepancy??? Many speech-language pathologists tend to use more of the AVERAGE of what children can say at a given age as the guideline. On the other hand, the AAP, CDC, & Mayo Clinic are providing us with the MILESTONE as the guideline (remember that is what MOST children are able to dothink approximately 90%). Does this help clear up any confusion? Basically, nobody is wrong, but it is very important for parents to understand the different guidelines and the reason for this discrepancy. This is why they created the expected range to help bridge the gap and share the numbers from both schools of thought! So you may be wondering....what does this mean for your child? Head to the Speech Sisters blog to find out! https://speechsisters.com/how-many-words-should-my-child-h/ See more

If youve got a great friend that you trust, and you wont be hurt by their honesty if they say "yes", maybe you can ask them this question? As parents, we hear our kids ALL DAY LONG. Maybe you need a fresh pair of ears to let you know if your child might be experiencing difficulties saying their sound clearly and correctly. An experienced parent can know that a grunt and a wink means hey, I want my favourite on the couch and a warm glass of milk stat! - but making sure yo...u child is understood in all of their environments is SO important. If you arent sure if your little one could benefit from help - reach out and send me a message.

Pronoun confusion is part of normal language development. That being said - every kid is different. While some have no trouble with this - others have more. Here you can see Zoey (aged 3 years, 5 months) uses her instead of she. Note how I repeat it back the way Id like her to say it. Im not correcting, just modelling and highlighting what she will be saying eventually.... Curious about pronouns? Here is some great info from @therapybuddies on how and when they typically develop. Children typically acquire pronouns in the following order: Between 12-26 months of age, children will use the pronouns I (to refer the themselves) and it Between 27-30 months, children will acquire the pronouns my, me, mine, and you Between 31-34 months, children will use your, she, he, your, and we Between 35-40 months, the pronouns they, us, hers, his, them and her are acquired Between 41-46 months children will use its, our, him, myself, yourself, ours, their, and theirs At 47+ months, the pronouns herself, himself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves are acquired . . . . . . . #cobourgspeechtherapyservices #pronouns #highlighting #modelling #dontcorrectallthetime #makeitfun #dontwsitandsee #askanexpert
