Until a new policy and land use planning is in place, we believe there needs to be a full stop on all exploration and development activities." An update from CPAWS Southern Alberta on the provincial announcement around the reinstatement of Alberta's coal policy, thanks to the tens of thousands of Albertans who spoke up. Join us Wednesday evening at the Protect Our Water - Say No to Coal Town Hall to learn more about the stronger protections necessary to protect the Rocky Mountains and the communities, land and water impacted by coal developments. Our work is not done.

"The Blood Tribe/Kainai is pursuing a legal challenge against the Government of Alberta’s hasty decision to rescind the Coal Policy. Under the Policy, open pit mining was not permitted in Category 2 lands in the Rocky Mountains to protect the headwaters of several major river systems and critical fish and wildlife habitat, particularly in highly sensitive areas of the Crowsnest Pass Region. The legal challenge was filed jointly with the Siksika Nation on November 25, 2020 and will be heard by the courts sometime in 2021."
