When taking Drama, it can be hard to know how to approach a play for the first time. What sorts of questions should you ask? What should you look for? How do you know what you should make up, versus what you should look for factual sources for?... How do you keep an eye out for objectives and relationships throughout your analysis? How many times should you read a play? How do you transition from successfully analyzing a play, into memorizing a monologue and beginning to make artistic decisions about its performance? In our new series of videos, we use Jean Paul Satre's "No Exit" to provide a 'walk-through' of preparing a monologue. Step-by-step, we'll walk you through how to read a play, how to memorize a monologue, how to discover your character, and how to bring that character to a final performance...all by yourself! Check out our new videos, and get started analyzing your next play today! #acting, #onlinelearning VISIT: https://youtu.be/VHRFQGlDnZc

DUBSTEP DANCING: https://bit.ly/2ZeF7pu Today, some really cool isolation work to check out! In the late 90s and early 2000s, a lot of interesting sub-genres of pop and lock, and of hip hop dance in general began to emerge. In our courses we offer the opportunity for dancers and other movement artists to engage with different movement styles, both by learning more about their origins, and by exploring some of their movement.... Learn more about out courses, and how we enable those students at www.coileanarts.com today! What new style of artistic movement have you discovered over this pandemic? #dance, #dubstep, #onlinelearning

"I'm a recovering dance snob and maybe you should be one too." - Neoteric Dance Collaborative | Seacoast NH Contemporary Dance Company https://bit.ly/3hRLszA Check out this article written by a professional dancer who felt rejected by the dance community because she didn't fit certain stereotypes and perceptions about the field of dance. Because our art contains a world of technical superiority, it can be easy to be blinded by the pursuit of perfection. I think it is import...ant to remind ourselves -- as this artist is trying to do -- that all dance and movement art has validity. We don't need to limit ourselves to idealized balletic movement. Part of being creative artists is our willingness to look outside of traditional aesthetic. How is your art affected by traditional movement versus contemporary movement, and how can you avoid absolute thinking about the quality and execution of your movement? Check out these two dances! ORIGINAL: https://youtu.be/KQ6zr6kCPj8?t=218 ALTERED: https://bit.ly/2N8fy3U A few days ago, we were talking about how context can change art. Let's look at a more relevant example now, by looking at two versions of a now-famous choreography. The top link is the original music video, the bottom link features a different audio track.... How does altering the audio track change perception of the mood of the scene? Does it change assumptions that a viewer might make about the story, or the meaning behind the movements? How does it affect the overall impression of mood and atmosphere in the art piece? Tell us your opinions today! Chirimia Dancing: https://bit.ly/37raAsg African Gumboot Stomp: https://bit.ly/2zwEAX3 Today, a very simple question to pose...to what extent does dance tell the stories of a particular culture?... From First Nations ceremonies to Tap Dance, all dancing originates from somewhere. In our courses we explore the origins of Ballet, Jazz and Modern, to ensure that all dancers have a basic understanding of the more popular dance styles...but we also encourage them to explore other traditional forms. Arabic Dance, Hula Dance, Chinese Fan Dance, every one is interesting and unique. What's your favourite ethnic dance style? How does it capture your attention and why? AWESOME BRICK AND MORTAR DANCE: https://bit.ly/3e1uMn1 Today I'd like to take some time to recognize all of the wonderful work happening in Bricks and Mortar dance programs around the world. This is a video of Mrs. Jennifer Hawkins' class from Michigan, and their project in learning an adaptation of Jackson's choreographing, and flashmobbing for their school community (keep in mind this was in 2019, pre-covid).... As we transition back to 'normal' school life following the pandemic, I have two challenges for us as educators, and as community members: 1) Can we ensure that these programs continue, so that the joy from this work can continue to influence future generations and, 2) Can we give the same level of recognition to dance education occurring outside of the classroom, and ensure kids also receive credit for that work. Today's thought is "Unique Collaboration". Check out these two dances: https://bit.ly/2BWQavx https://bit.ly/30xAnxA... ...both of these dances are interesting, in that they are unusual collaborations. Collaborations between artists of the same medium (two dancers, two skaters, two gymnasts, two actors) is a very common event. What I would encourage you to do today, is to consider unusual collaborations. These may become increasingly common, and important, in the post-COVID world. How can artists work together to keep our art form alive and to tell stories? How does the Ukulele enhance the tap dancing? How does the visual editing enhance the contemporary dancing? What artists could you collaborate with to help you develop your artistic conversations? What artists could you collaborate with to help you stand out from the crowd? Cirque du Soleil employs Clowns (https://bit.ly/2UxnnnT) and Actors (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nhf2A8L0v0) in collaboration with its Gymnasts. ACTING LESSON: https://youtu.be/0eWjEB3pf4I This is the third in a series of introductory videos that I'm working on about Michael Chekhov's physicalized acting technique. Today's topics are 'expanding', or outward movement; and 'contracting', or inward movement. Give it a try and experience for yourself how to create psychological gestures that move outward and inward! The first few videos of this series are going to explore ingredients/components of psychological gestures.... After we explore, together, how to create gestures, we will learn how to apply them to relationships and aspects of characterization. This style of acting is explored at the Grade 12 level of Coilean Arts' Drama and Dance Courses. To learn more about how we support young performers by giving them access to high-quality resources, tools, and techniques, visit www.coileanarts.com today!
