This week for our Guelph Heritage Properties Series, we are featuring 83 Essex St in Guelph The features of this building include a beautiful but simplistic façade with a pointed arch roof in the center with lancet windows on either side and a Gothic gable vent above the front door. Another visually appealing characteristic of this building is it’s Gothic Revival style (a style that was quite popular at the time!), and three symmetrical bays with three, 4 over 4 lancet win...dows on the north and south sides. And now for a little bit of history! This Gothic Revival style historic site plays a very significant part in our lovely city’s history! Built by John Hall in 1880, this British Methodist Episcopal Church became a safe haven for the black community in the mid-19th century. Most of the black refugees migrating since the 1840’s travelled via the Underground Railroad and after arriving in Canada, many members of the black community chose Guelph as their new home. Interesting, right?! In 1881, ’s of Guelphites of African-American descent resided in the Essex area because of the welcoming community surrounding the church. And for nearly a century, this one and one-half story limestone church stood as a place of safety and security for the black community and as a symbol of pain, hope and freedom. Since 2012, the church currently operates as the Guelph Black Heritage Society to serve as a cultural, historical, and social centre and to preserve the historical significance of the church’s history.
