We have some great fantasy and sci-fi reads by Black authors available in store! The Fifth Season By N.K Jemisin is the first novel in The Broken Earth Trilogy. The Fifth Season takes place on a planet with only one super continent called Stillness. Every few centuries, the inhabitants of Stillness must endure a "Fifth Season" of catastrophic climate change. The Rage of Dragons By Evan Winter is the first novel in The Burning Series. The story follows the main character, Ta...u, as he seeks to avenge the death of his family by becoming the greatest swordsmen to ever live, in a society ravaged with war. Parable of the Sower By Octavia Butler is the first novel in the Earthseed duology. It takes place in 2025 as the world is descending into madness and anarchy. The story follows our main character, Laura Olamina, as she navigates a society destroyed by drugs, disease, war and chronic water shortages. She attempts to lead herself and other refugees from the outskirts Los Angeles to safer land in the north.

Looking for great reads for Black History Month? Check out 2 of our Staff Picks! Such a Fun Age By Kiley Reid This novel follows the story of a young Black woman named Emira who works as a nanny for a white family. The novel opens with a scene during which Emira is wrongly accused of kidnapping the white baby that she nannies for. A number of events unfold as a result of this accusation, and the novel takes a deep dive into Emira's relationship with the family she works for... and her white boyfriend. Such a Fun Age is a captivating story that brings important topics to light, such as performative activism and the effect of microagressions. Grand Union By Zadie Smith Grand Union is Zadie Smith's first collection of short stories. These 10 stories explore a wide range of topics, from first love to cultural despair. With piercing wit, Smith's prose delves into how race, class and gender roles shape the world that we live in.

We received another amazing book from a local author! The talent we have up here is so wonderful. This is our manager Christy approved! The Storybook Girl by Cairine Gormley is a tale of secrets kept while keeping up appearances, and the courage it takes to finally let another human see the truth. Written as a fairy tale, this story is accessible for young humans while still holding meaning for those who are a little bit less young.
