THIS YEARS TOP 20 FITNESS TRENDS, and CCF scored pretty darn good with what you want! The American College of Sports Medicine circulates a survey to professionals around the globe to compile an annual list of fitness industry trends published in ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal. This year’s list includes trends identified by survey respondents in previous years, but also includes new additions that could shape the industry throughout the new year and beyond.... #1 Wearable technology topped the trend list for the second consecutive year, marking the fourth time in the past five surveys that respondents gave it the top spot. According to the ACSM, wearable tech is already a $95 billion industry, encompassing such monitors as Apple Watches, Samsung Gear devices, Fitbit and more. These wearables continue to be compelling to users, despite some concerns over accuracy that have been noted in years past. #2 High-intensity interval training was identified as the No. 2 trend on the 2020 list, supplanting group training in that spot from the previous year. Gyms the world over are deploying some form of HIIT programming, despite some concerns of increased injury risk. #3 Group training, defined as an activity led by an instructor including more than five participants, fell to No. 3 in 2020. Despite being available as an option since the ACSM launched its survey 14 years ago, group training first cracked the top 20 trends list in 2017. #4 Training with free weights was identified as the fourth most popular fitness trend for 2020. Prior surveys simply asked survey respondents to consider strength training as an option, but that was considered to be too broad of a category, so this year’s survey broke out free weight training as its own option. Free weights, barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells and medicine balls all fall under the category, with instructors teaching correct form first and progressing to greater resistance. # 5 trend on the 2020 list was personal training. At CCF, we understand that exercise is important, but there’s more to being active than just the gym, and in our personal coaching we always push the importance of this pyramid with our private clients . Base: non static movement and irregular position. We’ve all heard, sitting is the new smoking, and sitting less in 90 degree seats is a must. Use standing desks, floor cushions, Japanese inspired furniture, sit in the ground more, stretch during c...ommercials, and just try to be more flexible in your day. The more you can make passive movement a part of your life the better . Next; engaging in simple, NEAT (Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis) daily movement. Walking more, counting steps with a tracker, simple stretching routines, taking the stairs, parking far away from doors, sitting on a Swiss ball, etc. Aiming for 6-10,000 steps per day (our coaching clients track their daily steps) . Finally we get to focused exercise. This means increasing the heart rate above typical walking rates for extended times, or engaging the muscle under intense tension for short periods. This is where we build age defying muscle, and build a truly strong , lungs, body and even . When it comes to building core strength, the plank ranks at the top due to its ability to work all four muscle groups in the stomach. The plank strengthens the rectus abdominis (those ’six pack’ muscles), the transverse abdominis (deep core stabilizing muscles), and the internal and external obliques (hop and back mobilizing muscles). As your abdominal muscles become stronger, there is less reliance on the back muscles. This reduces lower back pain as your body resorts to yo...ur abdominal muscles for everyday activities and exercises. But make sure that when you are doing the plank, pay very careful attention to your body position and alignment. Ensure that your neck and spine are in neutral position don’t be looking up, but also don’t be looking down with a drooped neck. If you want us to check out your plank pose, come talk to us and we’ll be happy to check your form and provide any feedback. When you’re starting out, aim for 30 second hold. As your strength improves, work your way up to 1 minute and keep adding to that time. While it’s important to get enough protein in your diet, it’s also important to make sure you’re getting the right type of protein. Do you think you’re getting enough protein? You might not be getting enough from the right sources because not all protein has the same value. Here’s some quick info. Protein is made up of 20 amino acids. Out of that 20, our body can produce 11 of these amino acids. Therefore, we do not need to get those 11 from external sources.... But for good health, we must get the other 9 amino acids (called essential amino acids) from the foods we eat. When a food contains all 9 of these amino acids, it’s called a complete protein and that is why some proteins are better than others. Complete proteins include: all animal proteins (meat, poultry, fish), eggs and dairy. Plant-based sources of "complete protein" include: quinoa, buckwheat, hempseed, blue-green algae, soybeans. But note, these plant-based sources may not contain as much protein per serving as animal products. But don’t get caught up with having complete protein at every meal. Also, if you’re vegetarian or vegan, or just want to limit the amount of protein from animal sources, you can add incomplete plant-based proteins to meet your body’s needs. These combinations of incomplete protein" sources to add include: nuts or seeds with whole grains; whole grains with beans; beans with nuts or seeds. So next time you reach for that protein bar with "10g or 25g of protein on the label, be careful.
