Sometimes, a #MealsonWheels volunteer may be the only friendly face a client sees each day. Why not consider supporting #MarchforMeals2021 and donate to our Give A Meal subsidy program, so our clients don't go without. https://www.commcareptbo.org/giveameal... #onhealth #onpoli

Meet Dave Stevenson We are fortunate to have so many skilled and caring individuals who serve as our Board Members. Each month we will share with you a regular feature to introduce these individuals to you. This month we will feature the Acting Treasurer on our Board of Directors, Dave Stevenson.... Dave holds an Honours Bachelor of Mathematics (Major in Actuarial Science and Minor in Statistics) from the University of Waterloo. He has extensive management experience, managing financial reporting, product development, marketing strategy, transition planning, and project management. Following a 20 year career in the financial and insurance sector, Dave has held several executive positions with the Bank of Montreal, Canada Direct, RBC Insurance and the Royal Bank Financial Group. Why is a financial expert interested in Community Care? I wanted to contribute in some small way in helping to shape and enrich the community, to help it achieve its potential, said Stevenson. Given the demographics of Peterborough, the acknowledgement of my own ageing, and the fact that Transition Navigators caters to the elderly, I found Community Care to be a natural fit. Since joining the board in 2019, and now chairs its Finance Committee, Dave’s focus is to help achieve a stable funding model, so planning can be more sure-footed well into the future. This is even more crucial now that government funding becomes less and less predictable. To read the full editorial on Dave Stevenson visit -https://www.commcareptbo.org/about%20us/Board%20Members

We at Community Care Remember Since 1919, Canadians have gathered to observe a two-minute silence at 11am at war memorials, cenotaphs, religious services and workplaces. Although we can not physically gather this year we will continue to honour this tradition and take these moments of silence at our desks starting at 11am.... Today is Congregate Dining Day within Community Support Month. Our Buckhorn office has reinvented our Diner's program there, running programs each week with limited numbers of attendees. Each participant gets their own card table (unless they are in the same social bubble) and the tables are set apart in accordance with the provincial health and safety guidelines. Just like in a restaurant masks are worn entering and until seated and put back on when leaving their table.... Another example of how we adapted so that we could continue to provide this essential program for our community. #csm2020, Ontario Community Support Association

October is Community Support Month #csm2020. It is a time for us to celebrate our service to the community and it is particularly special for us this year. We Never Stopped! We are proud to say that we did not miss a day of service to our clients or stop our essential programs. ... We found ways to safely support our communities most vulnerable and in fact, ramped up our services to accommodate the surge of need. COVID-19 has changed everyone’s day to day activities but we, as always, continue to go the extra kilometre to keep seniors, throughout the City and County of Peterborough, safe and healthy in their own homes. This October, consider making a donation to support our month-long "Kms for Care 2020" fundraising initiative so that we can continue to provide essential programs and services. https://www.canadahelps.org//commun/p2p/kms-for-care-2020/

Wednesday, September 30 is Orange Shirt Day Orange Shirt Day is to raise awareness of the individual, family, and community inter-generational impacts of Residential Schools. September 30th is recognized nationally as Orange Shirt Day, and Canadians are encouraged to wear an orange shirt in the spirit of healing and reconciliation. ... Orange shirt day is a movement that officially began in 2013 but in reality, it began in 1973 when six-year-old Phyllis Webstad entered the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, outside of Williams Lake, BC. Young Phyllis was wearing a brand new orange shirt for her first day of school new clothes being a rare and wonderful thing for a First Nation girl growing up in her grandmother’s care - but the Mission Oblates quickly stripped her of her new shirt and replaced it with the school’s institutional uniform. While she only attended for one year the impact affected Ms. Webstad’s life for many years. I finally get it, that feeling of worthlessness and insignificance, ingrained in me from my first day at the mission, affected the way I lived my life for many years. Even now, when I know nothing could be further than the truth, I still sometimes feel that I don’t matter. Ms. Webstad’s story is the nucleus for what has become a national movement to recognize the experience of survivors of Indian residential schools, honour them, and show a collective commitment to ensure that every child matters.

We Applaud our Volunteers!! We would not be able to provide the services and programs we do without the support and dedication of all of our volunteers! This year, we were not able to hold our Annual Volunteer Recognition Events where we celebrate our volunteers. Each year at these events we also present volunteers with Years of Service Pins. So, we decided to hit the road this summer and delivered awards to volunteers who have been volunteering with Community Care for 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 50 years!! Congratulations to all! A BIG thank you to all of our volunteers!

On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons. The composition of the world population has changed dramatically in recent decades. Between 1950 and 2010, life expectancy worldwide rose from 46 to 68 years. Globally, there were 703 million persons aged 65 or over in 2019. The region of Eastern and South-Eastern Asia was home to the largest number of older persons (261 million), followed by Europe and Nor...thern America (over 200 million). Did you know that older LGBTTQI2-S people: * Are less likely to seek health care when they need it? They often do not disclose their sexual orientation and/or gender identity and expression to their care providers for fear of discrimination?... They are at higher risk for negative health outcomes later in life, including depression, suicide, substance abuse, and smoking? They report more feelings of isolation from their communities? We embrace this year's theme of Pride in Other Spaces for Peterborough Pride Week taking place from September 18th-27th. We cannot gather for the parade as we have in years past, but we continue to work at staying connected and supporting all our clients and volunteers.
