Calgary Alliance for the Common Good 23.03.2021

COVID has made what was already evident even more apparent the importance of building connections and resilient communities and organizations. In this leader’s lunch, we will spend some time exploring what makes communities/organizations resilient from a mental health perspective. One critical factor of resiliency is social connection. Dr. Alex Bierman, from the University of Calgary, will join us for our conversation. He is a sociologist who has studied social isolation and what builds social connection, and how social inequality impacts stress across our life span. Join our next leader's lunch on March 2nd at noon.

Yesterday was the tabling of the Alberta Government's budget in the legislature. This begins a process that will have the proposed budget work through the legislature, its committees, and then be granted ascent into implementation later this spring. We at the Calgary Alliance are pleased to see more funding for mental health in the 2021.... The Green Line LRT project, & if it will start this summer. Substantial cuts to education - for both K-12 and post-secondary institutions. https://livewirecalgary.com//caretaker-budget-mayor-nensh/

Today is the beginning of Lent with Ash Wednesday. Many congregations throughout the city are participating in this Lenten season by fasting, prayer, almsgiving, and commitments to their community. It is one way to engage in one's faith as part of a greater whole, and in this trying time this re-centering as members of the community is more important than ever before. #AshWednesday #Lent

Join our team for our Foundations of Community Organizing training, which is running from April 12th to the 26th. This introductory training provides content based on the philosophy and practices developed by the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF), which builds on lessons from over 70 years of organizing experience. It assists organizers where they live - their communities. The training provides a foundation for organizers to learn about what community organizing is and why to... use a community organizing approach in their work. https://www.calgarycommongood.org/2021_foundations_for_comm

#PinkShirtDay It’s about speaking out against bullying: standing up to transphobia, homophobia, sexism, ableism, and racism. Our focus is working together and treating others with dignity and respect: and this day brings attention to that.
