Launch of Consumption and Treatment Services Fund: Preventing overdose deaths and improving health With the launch of an opioid response hub in the former Greyhound bus station in Peterborough, organizing partners are calling on community members to invest in establishing a Consumption and Treatment Services (CTS) site. A CTS welcomes people to use their drugs safely under trained supervision and be connected to other life-saving supports. Partners are seeking approval of Pr...ovincial funding for a CTS but this will take many months. Help is needed to retain this ideal property and to do professional studies needed for the application. There have been 36 suspected overdose deaths in the first nine months of 2020; there were 28 deaths in all of 2019. Our public health unit area has the third highest rate of opioid overdose deaths and emergency room visits in the province. The COVID pandemic has increased the risk of overdose as it has created more desperation, isolation, and an even more toxic drug supply. Camp Kawartha Kids Endowment Fund gives to the next generation For Carol and Ralph Ingleton, it’s time to give to the next generation. This was their thinking in establishing the Camp Kawartha Kids Endowment Fund at the Community Foundation. Camp Kawartha has strong values that support young people from a wide variety of backgrounds to be kind to the environment, each other and themselves, says Carol. Camp levels the playing field and gives kids a chance to discover who th...ey are with nature, freedom and kindness as teachers. Focused on knowing the difference between personal needs and wants, Carol and Ralph give because it feels good. According to Carol, it’s where happiness comes from. Sustainable living is also a priority for Carol and Ralph, knowing that stewarding community and the environment is critical for future generations. By establishing a fund with the Community Foundation, you will have the flexibility to shape your own charitable giving to reflect your values and interests. Professional management by the Community Foundation ensures that the process is simple and straightforward. Donating securities, life insurance policies, or RRIF/RRSP proceeds while living or through your will can provide significant tax advantages. While there are many reasons people choose the Community Foundation to support their philanthropy, they all want to make our community the best it can be, now and for years to come. You care about your community. Join with others who share your commitment. The Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, the Peterborough 360 Degree Nurse Practitioner Clinic, and PARN-Your Community AIDS Resource Network have laun...ched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $50,000 in support of Peterborough’s first consumption and treatment services site. According to a media release issued by PARN on Wednesday (November 18), the funds will be used to retain the property at 220 Simcoe Street (the former Greyhound bus station at the corner of Simcoe and Alymer) where the site would be established, and to cover the costs of studies and renovations required to operate the site. An opioid response hub is already located at the location, but a consumption and treatment services site would allow people to use their drugs safely under trained supervision and to be connected to other life-saving supports. Making a Difference Today and Tomorrow For Betty and Bill Morris, their charitable giving offers a double happiness. We get the enjoyment of seeing how the money can make a difference today but also over the long term, says Bill.... The Morris’ have lived in the Peterborough area since 1998 and quickly started volunteering in their new community. The couple established the Betty and Bill Morris Fund in 2016. Betty has served on the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough’s board of directors for several years and during that time, learned first-hand about the benefits of giving to a community foundation. The Foundation links people with a philanthropic nature with the priority needs of the charitable sector in the community a win-win for all. They chose to set up their own fund for several reasons: - Fund agreements are tailored to each donor and individuals can choose areas of interest or specific charities to direct their donations; - Donations are ‘pooled’ with others which are professionally invested and managed; - Donors receive a report each year about their fund and regular communication from the Community Foundation; - Donors can easily monitor and add to their fund. Another benefit, says Bill means having our fund is an opportunity to let our kids know what we’re doing and to get them involved if they want to know more. It’s like a family project. Most recently, the Community Foundation has been able to respond to more immediate community needs in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s this kind of flexibility, says Bill, that makes the Community Foundation attractive to he and Betty, and distinct from other types of charitable giving. Setting up your own charitable fund at the Community Foundation gives you all the flexibility and involvement of a private foundation while relieving you of the back office costs and responsibilities. The Community Foundation encourages anyone with an interest in establishing their own charitable fund to speak with Foundation staff. Mental Health Recovery During a Pandemic When the pandemic was declared last spring, Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge had to adjust many of their mental health recovery services. A grant from the COVID-19 Community Response Fund provided a variety of essential supports including supplying clients with taxi credits and cell phones, providing single-session counselling, and covering the costs of hotel rooms for justice clients recently... released from custody. This is a good news story, but more needs to be done. The COVID-19 Community Response Fund supports ongoing recovery needs as charities and vulnerable residents continue to adapt and recover from the effects of the pandemic. Pandemic emergency and recovery: supporting survivors of sexual and gender based violence Demand for services at Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre (KSAC) has gone up significantly during the pandemic. A grant from the COVID-19 Community Response Fund supported one of Ontario's first 24/7 text lines for survivors of sexual violence a new service that arose from increased social isolation and physical distancing measures. This is a good news story, but more needs to be done.... Honestly, the biggest challenge is ensuring we have enough staff to support this large service increase when we were already under capacity before the pandemic, says Lisa Clarke, Executive Director at KSAC. During the pandemic, funders and partner agencies have been working together and building relationships for example our work with Community Care and the Nourish Project providing food security for our clients this has been so wonderful and hopeful. The COVID-19 Community Response Fund supports ongoing recovery needs as charities and vulnerable residents continue to adapt and recover from the effects of the pandemic.
