For the last post in this series we have highlighted two values that are closely linked. Trauma-informed practice is a pair of glasses you put on. It's a len...s to see the world through. Simply put, trauma-informed practice recognizes that trauma has a wide-reaching impact on people that affects their daily living. Trauma impacts behavior, decision-making ability, social connections, and so much more. Understanding what trauma looks like day-to-day enhances service provider's ability to recognize and meet the needs of the people receiving services. Further, it allows staff to recognize how trauma (including secondhand or vicarious ) impacts them. Trauma-informed practices ties directly with a supportive work environment. A supportive work environment is creating a space where staff have what they need to be successful in their work. This goes beyond having the material items needed. A supportive work environment might include flexible hours so staff can balance family and work, consistent supervision and opportunities to discuss difficult situations, supporting social connections, and encouraging professional development. Together, trauma-informed practice and a supportive work environment reduce turn over and burn out, create a safer space for staff and participants, and allow the work to be the focus.

Chris Nikic, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN! Congratulations Chris on becoming the first person with Down syndrome to finish an IRONMAN. Chris swam 2.4 miles, biked 112 mil...es and ran 26.2 miles. The everyday lives of people with intellectual disabilities are often unecessarily called inspirational. This though, this is inspirational!
