What a great resource this is for our clients and their families! If you know anyone who would benefit from this service, don't hesitate to share!
BC's COVID vaccination dates have been announced!
COVID vaccination for community based seniors 80+ is planned for February and March. Health authority providers should be in contact with eligible individuals without any action on their part. See the BC CDC website for more details.
The Google Live Transcribe app allows people with hearing impairments to read speech in real-time and participate in a conversation almost seamlessly without sign language or lip reading. For our clients who lost their hearing later in life this app has been a great benefit and allowed them to reconnect with daily conversations and socialization. Available currently for free on Android. Contact us for help navigating the technology needed or setup.
Perhaps that time has come again!

Great perspective on design and writing that is inclusive across our multi-sensory abilities as they vary and change.
For some seniors in the community, caregivers are their primary source of human contact. For months now, and still, they have lost our hugs and small affections. Our smiles and our voices are among the reassurances we have left to give. Face shields have allowed us to keep that human touch where masks created another barrier. Thank you to UVIC Engineering & Dr. Stephanie's team at the Willerth Lab for the amazing face shields. And thank you, as we've all come to appreciate mo...re, for the difference a smile can make. Volunteer driver services are not running during the pandemic leaving at-risk people in our communities without a critical support. Community Plus will be providing free driving services to medically necessary appointments at the Cancer Clinic while volunteer driver services are not running. Once we start driving someone in a treatment regime they will be prioritized for further drives until their regime completes. This service is available to people able to be picked up betw...een Sooke and Sidney. Drivers are insured for transportation, non-latex gloves are provided, vehicles are aired out and contact surfaces are disinfected between rides. Riders must be able to get in and out of vehicles with minimal support and sign a liability waiver. All aboard the Community Plus bus! Just kidding, rides are one on one. Call 250-658-6508 to ask about availability.
Reducing opportunities for harm as a home care provider in a pandemic
Please feel that the danger is close - it has been here for weeks! Too many people are still acting as if it is business as usual. Continuing to do so will endanger more lives and drag the economic crisis out further.
Recommended reading to reduce the risk that you become a vector of contagion to a vulnerable individual. Vancouver Island has one confirmed case which may mean more we don't know about in the community. Sensible general precautions are warranted.
