BC Yukon Command of the Royal Canadian Legion Logo 10.21 - Cybercrime Awareness Memo # 10.21 FROM: Veronica Brown, BC/Yukon Command Executive Director... Dear Comrades, With the increased number of cyber security attacks and email scams going around, we would like to take this opportunity to bring to your attention to an email scam that has targeted our organization and everyone should be aware of. We have had cases of Legion members receiving emails that appear to be from staff or Command Officers asking them for a favor, or to buy gift cards for them. These emails are called spear phishing emails. This is one of the most common and most dangerous attack methods currently used to conduct fraud, usually on businesses and organizations. Spear phishing scams involve scammers pretending to be from legitimate sources to convince individuals to send them money. These scams leverage existing relationships between the person receiving the email and the person sending it. The sender's name appears to be the actual email address of the source they're pretending to be, a tactic known as spoofing. If you check the actual email address you will find it does not come from a Legion email. Warning signs and email is a phishing email it is unsolicited direct contact from a senior official you are not normally in contact with requests for absolute confidentiality pressure or a sense of urgency unusual requests that do not follow internal procedures threats or unusual promises of reward Please do not respond to these emails just delete them. If you do respond please remember that no Legion Officer or employee will ever ask you to purchase something for them over email. If in doubt, don’t purchase anything, call the person you think sent the email and confirm it is from them. For more information and resources on how to protect yourself, we recommend consulting the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website at: https://www.antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca/index-eng.h. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at (604) 579-0051 or [email protected]. In comradeship, Veronica Brown

Three-quarters of The Royal Canadian Legion’s 1380 Branches have now received close to three-quarters of the support dollars available through the Veterans Orga...nization Emergency Support Fund (VOESF). I’m elated to see this next phase of funding heading out the door, says Thomas D. Irvine, Dominion President. I’m happy our team was able to work hard at all levels to expedite this financial help, and we once again thank Veterans Affairs Canada for this much needed assistance.
