Was a chilly one this morning. We had heard Bernie Sanders may have been in Town, and look who was waiting when we went to open the store this morning! How did he get across the border! LOL

Do it yourself! What do you think of these non-corrodable electrical connectors! Ingenious, but we haven't come across anyone who has actually done this - yet!

Ever looked at one of the tall ships and wondered what all those sails were called? Well here you have all of them! Not the easiest to read, but you can make them all out. Thanks to Historic vessel Vega.

Follow up from an earlier post on whales. Quite often it’s the spout you see in the distance. This may help you identify the species without seeing them or being close.

Have you used the Tidal grids in the Comox Marina? There are two grids available to do bottom work on your boat at a much cheaper option than hauling out. One with a deeper water depth than the other. Mind you time is a limiting factor! so only jobs that can be done completely in a relatively short period of time can be done. To determine the depth of tide there is a large chart on a sign at the grids showing what depths each grid gets on a given tide. One of our staff had th...eir boat on the grid this weekend, and it was a 16+ foot tide, so about 7 feet of water on grid 2 for his Hunter 31. To use the grids, you must reserve and pay ahead of time at the Town of Comox Town Office. The total cost now is $84. Right now there is a table outside with all the info and forms. Once completed you just drop the envelope in the drop-box by the front door. The office is closed to the public during this COVID19 period. When on the grid, you can scrape and paint if you have time, but it all must be contained on tarps that you remove, nothing can be left on the ground. There is no power washing allowed. There are plugins for power, and cleats for mooring and tying lines. All the details are in a comprehensive handout available at the office and on the table. At high tide the grids are not difficult to access and tie up to. See more

For anyone lucky enough to be down in Comox bay they would catch a glimpse of a beautiful old ship the Marabell anchored out there. She was a minesweeper in the US navy in 1943 then transferred to the War Shipping Administration in 1948. She went through numerous private owners/companies from then on. The Marabell is a converted hydrographic survey vessel of wood construction. The boat deck consists of an extensive foredeck leading to a raised wheelhouse followed by accommodations and lounges. The after portion of the boat deck consists of a small exterior area surrounded by stanchions and handrails. The weather deck consists of accommodation spaces, an after saloon, a galley, and a stowage area. #marabell #oldboats

Imagine this as your helm! Wheels steering on ships didn't come along until the 18 century. Up until then it was all whip staffs and tillers which limited the size of ships. Early wheels, like this one, used a block and tackle system to control the tiller. A wheel like this could take up to 8 helmsmen, which tells you how heavy that ship was to steer when the sea kicked up. - Courtesy of Historic Vessel Vega
