Happy New Year's Resolutions! 2020 has been quite a year to say the least, and many of us want 2021 to be a fresh start. It’s natural to start off the New Year thinking about all of the goals you want to set. For some, the New Year is all about making resolutions for healthy living, and diet and weight loss are always top of the list. But, many people turn to fad weight loss diets this time of year, instead of thinking about diet changes that promote and sustain a lifestyle... over the long term. How can you make your goals more sustainable and attainable? Make your resolutions specific and realistic so it's easier to achieve them! Here are my top 5 resolutions you can try for the new year: 1. Try serving 1 colourful vegetable at each meal. Add more color to your meals with plant-based foods like vegetables and fruit. To kick it up a notch, try making half your plate vegetables! 2. Try a new recipe using seasonal foods once a week. Seasonal foods tend to be less expensive as they are in season so this will save you some bucks! Try new recipes and don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone. 3. Practice mindful eating for 1 meal a day. Whether it's breakfast, lunch or dinner, try to be in the present, avoid distractions, savor every bite, and enjoy your meal. This will help you listen to your body’s signals, recognize hunger and fullness cues, and allow you to find joy in eating! 4. Plan 2-3 meals for the week in advance. If you're someone who wants to try making meal planning and meal prep part of your weekly routine, start by planning 2-3 meals for the week and put aside 1 day to do the prepping. Meal planning will help you save money and reduce food waste. 5. Don't go hungry during the day. Maintain eating regular meals and snacks throughout the day and do not starve yourself to save up for one big meal.

Meet David, a Registered Kinesiologist here with us at Competitive Edge. His educational journey started out at Brock University before transferring to Sheridan College, where he received a Bachelor's of Applied Health Sciences Degree in Exercise Science & Health Promotion. With this education he was able to become a registered Kinesiologist inSeptember 2016. Kinesiologists use the latest evidence-based research to treat and prevent injury and disease, and to improve movement... and performance. Kinesiologists work with people of all ages and physical abilities in many settings to help them achieve their health and wellness goals, and improve quality of life. "I was first introduced to the topic of Exercise and Kinesiology in high school, where I took a course in 'Exercise Science'. Knowing that there were opportunities for a possible career in the fitness industry, I took every next step to make it happen. I was particularly responsive to how my knowledge of exercise could translate to coaching and preparing individuals who are looking to improve in their sport, or those who are injured to help with return-to-work functions or activities of daily living David has been employed with the clinic since 2017, though it has been longer that we have known him. He interned with us during his post-secondary education and has had family attending the clinic since 2014. HIP EXTERNAL ROTATION As much as we want to get faster, jump higher, and move better, we have to make sure that we have the space and the capacity in the joints utilized/involved. Create the Space Train the Movement required... Repeat Consider this... in simple terms... If you you want to pivot and turn and your hip is limited in opening up ( ie. open the gate) the body will find the path of least resistance ( maybe knee or back). This is where we will see the break down over time as our knee or back may not have as much rotation required to do the specific movement as the hip is required to. Trust the process, break up your workouts to specific needs so is not just random things out together. Contact us for more info and personalized workouts.
