Well this brings us back to computer classes in the 1990s, a machine running #Windows 3.1! Released by #Microsoft in 1992 Windows 3.1 was, like its predecessor 3.0, an MS-DOS based platform but it included improved system stability, expanded support for multimedia, and it introduced a #TrueType font which made Windows a viable #desktop #publishing platform for the first time. Most importantly of all Windows 3.1 was the first version to include #Minesweeper - truly a blessing ...to all the bored office workers out there! Interesting tidbit, this particular machine has Depth Dwellers installed on it, a game from 1994 that purports itself as virtual reality 3D action game - VR in 1994? Who knew? Just when we think we’ve seen everything something like this rolls into the shop - a school #intercom system! This is the Compact 3200 #Dukane made by General Electric, a microprocessor-based single-master intercom and sound distribution controller, accompanied by a #Bogen Model DDU250 #microphone. If you were ever called down to the principals’s office this may have been the machine used to summon you - since all of us at the shop were model students (wink, wink) this machin...e was a revelation - but for the less well-behaved students out there this may bring back some not-so-great memories from your school days. Here’s the companion piece to our previous post, this time it’s the #DBX Model 222. This is also a noise reduction unit but unlike the more expensive Model 228 this can only be used for cassette tapes and reel-to-reel recordings. DBX noise reduction did not achieve widespread popularity because its compressed recordings didn’t sound great when played on non-DBX equipment. #Dolby B, on the other hand, used milder levels of compression and the sound of Dolby-encoded tapes was c...onsidered acceptable to consumers even when played back on non-Dolby equipment, giving it the edge in the noise reduction marketplace. Another nice find at the shop, some vintage Hi-Fi recording gear! This is the #DBX Model 228 Noise Reduction and Dynamic Range Expander, released in 1982. As the name suggests this can be used to reduce recording and playback hum and hiss and can increase the dynamic range (in decibels) of any program by up to 50%. Another one from #Apple Computers, this time we have the 15 #PowerBook G4 1.67. Released in 2005 at a price of $1,999 USD the PowerBook G4 featured a 1.67 GHz #PowerPC 7447a processor, 512 MB of DDR SDRAM and a 80GB HDD. The PowerBook’s striking aluminum case not only looked good but helped keep the weight of the machine down to a very manageable (for the time) 5.6 pounds, a little over twice the weight of a MacBook Air. Hi-yo silver! Here’s the Power Mac G4 #Quicksilver, so called because, well, it’s silver. Introduced by #Apple Computers in 2001 this Quicksilver #G4 was powered by a 733 MHz #PowerPC G4 processor, 128 MB SDRAM and a 40 GB hard drive. The G4 uses the same case design introduced with the Power Mac G3, complete with the fold-down door granting easy access to the interior and making it very easy to upgrade.
