Concordia Model UN External Delegation 06.04.2021

Model United Nations February recap. Concordia’s External Delegation opened its month of February with a new batch of extra delegates. With this newfound force, it attended Harvard National Model United Nations Conference. HNMUN is the highest-level conference Model UN conference in the world. This year, our team of 11 did not make the trip down to Boston. Instead, the conference was held over Zoom. Despite the online nature of the conference, debate was just a fierce as... ever. Be it as a member of the UN Security Council debating the steps to take in the Kashmir Crisis, or as journalists fervently defended Quebec's interests in the October Crisis, our delegates all rose to the challenge and had a memorable weekend. Normally, an important part of the Model UN experience is gathering at the Airbnb to trade war stories from the day and prepare all together for the upcoming day of debate. Even though there was no communal table for the team to gather around, that did not stop them from helping each other. From late-night phone calls to group Zoom calls, every team member was eager to help the other out. It was a communal effort, both before and during the conference, that led to everyone’s success and lifted our Secretary-General, Alexi Dubois, to win an honorable mention in his committee, The October Crisis, 1970. Congratulations to him and to the rest of the team for all their hard work. Later in the month, Concordia Model UN challenged itself to a new Conference. For the first time ever, CED attended Emory Universities Conference, MUNE. It is fair to say, the conference was a resounding success for Concordia. As are all conferences this year, MUNE was hosted virtually. Our delegates tunned into a mix of Discord rooms and Zoom videoconferences over the weekend. Despite this being our fourth virtual conference, online Model UN is still something we are trying to adapt too. Perhaps what delegates miss most about a in person conference is not being in an AirBnB with their team. While the team was obviously not all together physically, nightly debriefs and countless phone calls to help each other prepare definitely created a tightknit atmosphere between our team of nine. Our Head Delegate, David Muñoz was central to creating that team atmosphere. His tireless work for all of the team as well as each’s delegate’s tremendous effort led to our team winning the Outstanding Small Delegation award. This is our first delegation award of the year and we are incredibly proud of the team. To add to the delegation award, our delegates also won the following individual awards: Samo ebular, Honorable Mention - The Great Recession: A Building of a Bear Market Nikolas Manrique , Outstanding Delegate - One Country, Two Systems: Hong Kong 2020 @Alexi Dubois , Best Delegate - Ekecheiria 2028: The Olympic Truce Congratulations to the whole team.

Concordia’s External Delegation Attended NCSC, their first conference of the year this past weekend. The conference, hosted by Georgetown University, was held virtually due to the ongoing pandemic and travel restrictions. Our delegates were faced with a series of challenging scenarios, ranging from tackling corruption to negotiating mergers between unions. Added to the normal challenges of Model UN, our delegates also had to learn how to deal with the complexities of co...mmittees run entirely through zoom. While our team of six may not have been together physically each night, they did meet virtually every night to trade notes and give each other tips. Ultimately, this conference was a great learning experience for CED. The tricks we learnt from this first conference will be an invaluable tool for the delegation in future virtual conferences. Concordia’s External Delegation also won their first award of the year at NCSC, with Alexi Dubois, our secretary general of Conmun, winning an Honorable Mention in his committee, the AFL-CIO. Congratulations to him. See more
