Do you remember when the Big Nickel was in Coniston for a few months? It was initially removed from its base at what was the Big Nickel Mine in January 2001. It was disassembled at that time and brought to Lopes Mechanical in Coniston to be refurbished. On April 8, 2001, the Big Nickel was moved again, this time from its renovation site and relocated to Science North for the duration of the construction of Dynamic Earth, which lasted until May 2006. ... The nine-metre Big Nickel began its 35 kilometre trek from Lopes Mechanical Limited in Coniston to Science North at 7:00 a.m. The monument was transported horizontally on a tractor-trailer, along area highways and into commercial and residential city streets. Its enormous width covered three traffic lanes, which required a choreographed series of road closures in cooperation with City of Greater Sudbury police. The Big Nickel arrived at Science North at approximately 8:30 a.m. where two enormous cranes lifted the 12 ton monument onto a temporary concrete base. The Big Nickel is too important a landmark and tourist attraction to isolate in a construction zone, said Science North spokesperson Alan Nursall. At the same time, the relocation gave us an opportunity to completely refurbish the Big Nickel to a pristine state so that it can shine brightly for another four decades. Lopes Mechanical was awarded the tender in January 2001 to refurbish the coin’s original stainless steel sheathing which had corroded since the monument’s inauguration in 1964. The contract value of $179,000 included dismantling the coin at the former Big Nickel Mine, refurbishing and recasting its stainless steel exterior, rebuilding parts of the interior skeleton and its transport and installation at Science North.
