In therapy, the specialized setting is created by the trust that is born from the relationship. Today is World Peace Day. Someone recently asked me to choose 2-3 items from a list of primary values. My first pick was Peace (the other 2 turned out to be Compassion and Freedom). This choice had both personal and philosophical inspirations for me. I see peace at the very heart of things both tangible or intangible. All movement, all energies, and all experiences eventually reconcile themselves to peace. It is the origin and destination of all phenomena. ... Peace isn't stillness or inertia, but the fullness of a dynamically sustainable active universe. Even chaos has peace at its heart, like Yin arising from Yang. And in their eternal exchange, Yin and Yang form the ever-changing dynamic of form and emptiness, the vision of which is the recognition of peace at the heart of all appearances. Peace is also wisdom. It serves as the backdrop to all thought, the answer to all questions. Knowledge and meaning, the Logos, is infused with peace, an immortal principle. On a more personal note, part of the reason I dedicated myself to the path of psychotherapy had to do with my disbelief in 'world peace.' How can that be a realistic aspiration when the atmosphere at a family dinner is fraught with suffocating hostility? I was offended by advocating for something so vast and seemingly out-of-reach when my lived experience was often nightmarish in the home. I intuitively sensed the truth that also appears in the Dalai Lama's post from today, pointing out that world peace starts from within each of us. Through the disappointment of not being met with peace from my environment, I dedicated myself to finding it within and becoming a source for it. Today I live my life constantly orientating myself to standing for peace, mostly in small ways, sometimes in bigger ones. It is from my own connection to peace that I try to cultivate it around myself, and it's a practice that I aim to give all I got.
