We aren’t really ‘stuff’ people. But of all of our possessions, this is the one thing we agree as a Family that we could never give up. This is our Berkey water filter. We’ve had it for over a year now and we’ve never felt better or had more energy and we can all agree that it’s because we are drinking clean, filtered water. Why You Need a Self-Sterilizing Water Filter System: Filter lifespans (either in liters or a specified time between recommended element replacements), are a big selling point for water filter systems. However, a system’s lifespan may not tell the whole story of how well a system performs, or if the system is right for your particular needs. There is a water filtration phenomenon that can negatively affect stated filter lifespans: growthrough. It is a naturally occurring proce...ss that is often conveniently overlooked in advertising by water filter manufacturers. Understanding the Growthrough Process: Bacteria thrive in damp areas, such as filtration elements inside a water purification system. When the right conditions for growth are present (certain environmental conditions, temperature, pressure, etc.), combined with sufficient nutrients, cells can multiply and penetrate the walls of a water purification system’s filters. This is known as growthrough. And since carbon-based filters remove chlorine (which is used to combat bacterial growth) from drinking water, it is that much more imperative that a system’s filter elements are self-sterilizing. Growthrough and Filter Lifespan Claims: Growthrough can occur after just six months using typical tap water, or even sooner when filtering contaminated waterlong before many filters would realistically reach 3,000 gallons (a commonly advertised filter lifespan). So when you are comparing systems, it’s important to find out if growthrough is accounted for in the manufacturer’s lifespan calculations. Risks Posed by Growthrough: In the absence of a feedback mechanism to determine when growthough has occurred, this presents an especially concerning health risk. Once growthrough occurs, post-filtered water can actually be more bacteriologically contaminated than the original pre-filtered water. And since the process occurs at a microbial level, you’d never be able to identify it just by looking at it. However, a water quality test from a contaminated water filter could definitely be very eye-opening. It makes me so happy that my Berkey water filter system has its own little place in my van I’m so grateful that @conscious_water wanted to do this partnership with me. I think my Berkey is my vanlife staple. So what does it do? ... Berkey systems remove viruses, bacteria, parasites, and chemicals in water. It also makes the water taste like NOTHING! My first few days of vanlife, I’ve been lucky enough to have found potable water. But I’m someone who is picky about water taste too, and campsite water often tastes metallic-y to chemical-y to me. The Berkey has solved that! Also, it helps me keep my drinking water separate from my water for other tasks (like for doing dishes, brushing my teeth, etc.). This might not make sense to most - but in a van I have to really pay attention to how much water I’m using so I know when I fill up. I have 40L of water total (in two 20L jugs that I have to swap out). This might sound like a lot, but the average person uses almost FIFTY LITERS of water (more than my total water) each time they wash the dishes.
