MEDIA RELEASE - Province Tying CAs Up in Red Tape Repeal Schedule 6 What the Province is proposing to do through the changes in Schedule 6 significantly threatens the independent, watershed-based approach of Ontario’s conservation authorities that municipalities and others rely on to protect our natural resources and to steer development away from creating or exacerbating flooding and other natural hazards, Gavine said. This isn’t what you would expect a government to do in light of the growing and more complex climate change impacts we are experiencing. Removing obstructions such as leaves and trash can encourage better drainage to avoid storm drains from freezing. Because some storm drains lead to lakes and rivers, never apply salt directly on frozen storm drains. #WinterWednesdays #SourceWaterON http://bit.ly/2V4c5r2
On November 5, 2020, the provincial government announced changes to the Conservation Authorities Act (CA Act) and the Planning Act via Bill 229: Protect, Suppor...t and Recover From COVID 19 (Budget Measures Act). The proposed changes significantly impact the role and ability of conservation authorities to ensure a watershed-based approach to conserving Ontario’s environment and ensuring people and property are safe from natural hazards. Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) is deeply concerned that the proposed changes to the Conservation Authorities Act and the Planning Act if passed, would reduce our ability to protect the natural environment and our watershed. It would also remove citizen representation on our Board, which would be contrary to proper board governance. Councillor Lloyd Ferguson, HCA Chair, has sent a letter to the Province asking that Bill 229 be withdrawn, due to the many concerns HCA has with the proposed changes. #ConservationMatters
Jorgensen says there is currently a "very good process that works," noting that conservation authorities issue thousands of permits a year and less than half a per cent of those are appealed. #ConservationMatters

I believe that these changes will be to the detriment of all Ontarians, said Tim Lanthier, CAO of Grey Sauble Conservation Authority. Based on my initial review, I am quite concerned that these changes will dramatically impact conservation authorities and the communities that we serve.
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority (ABCA) is urging the government of Premier Doug Ford to reconsider changes it says could undermine conservation authority powers, create more red tape and allow developers to skip important checks and balances. Read more below. #ConservationMatters
