In 2020 we launched a community rain gauge program (thanks to funding from RBC #TechforNature). In total, 14 rain gauges were installed, and by the end of the rainy season, 811 data submissions were recorded among these volunteers. Thanks to all volunteers for your commitment to the program.

On February 16th, our biweekly snow survey revealed that average snow depth in our area was 36.8cm, less than half of 77.1 cm of snow that had accumulated at this same time last year. If this information interests you, stay tuned for our Open Data Portal, launching in 2021, where all of our current and historic snow data will be accessible to the public.

We take a snow core like this 30 times biweekly all winter long. It lets us keep track of how much water content is in the snowpack within our watersheds. At this location there is no shortage of snowshoe hare activity but we always make sure our samples are taken from an undisturbed location.

Snow removed from roads and parking lots may be contaminated with salt, oil, and heavy metals. Once the snow melts, these contaminants may reach groundwater or surface water. Local source protection plans help manage the risk posed to drinking water sources. To learn more visit https://rb.gy/gppisv #SourceWaterON #DrinkingWaterSources #WinterWednesdays
