To Win? We do not have to be competitive, with others, to win at business. By to win, I mean to be successful as determined by you, the business owner. As a matter of fact, rather than competing with your competitors, get close to them. As the saying goes, Keep your friends close and your competitors closer. You never know what you can learn from each other or if there is merit in collaborating. We know all too well that business can change in a heart beat (i.e. Covid) du...e to circumstances out of our control. Knowing others in the same, or similar, situation may be helpful. . You do, however, need to be competitive with your business goals. Assuming your short and long term goals are mapped out, work at exceeding the expectations. Measure progress carefully as time lines approach so you know whether you have to step up to achieve the goal. Treat meeting your goals like a sport. You are the athlete. . As the business athlete, you would likely discuss progress with your coach and formulate a strategy to ensure you can win. You would brainstorm and decide what needs to change, or improve, to achieve the desired results. . My message is simply to be fiercely competitive with yourself rather than stroll along on the path to a flat business. If your results are not what you expect, look back and audit your efforts and reflect on how strong your desire to win is. A mentor or coach can help with the audit and provide objective feedback. Believe Me? Well, most of us actually do not love it when we catch someone looking at us. Unless, of course, it is a loved one. We tend to look away quickly. Why? Usually it is a lack of confidence. Awkward. . Confidence is critical for business owners. Business owners need to hustle. Sometimes we hate to hustle because it makes us feel pushy. Or we avoid the hustle because we are afraid of failure. If we don’t hustle, we don’t fail. Holds true for any life decision. ... . Unless you inherit a successful business, the hustle is necessary. Yes, that means risk taking. There are no guarantees. You create service or product offers based on your belief in your business. But you might be wrong. That is what trial and error is. Be sure you know your tolerance for investment and time. If you have effectively promoted your offer and no one buys, move on. . Part of your promotion should be to tell everyone you know. Ask those you know to do you a favour and help you out, whether it is to pass on a flyer or forward an email. We love to do favours for those we know and trust! Use your people to help advertise. If those closest to you do not know what it is you do, you are missing a big opportunity. . Look them in the eye and tell them how excited you are to inform them of your new service or product. Be enthusiastic! Ask for promotional ideas, but not opinions (at this late stage). . It all holds true for anything you do in life. Keep it to yourself and no one will ever know if you fail. What if one person in your community of friends and family could help; but didn’t know? If anyone tells you that you are crazy, look them in the eye and say, Thank you, I love it when I catch you looking at me. Heaven? When you are in a place that mesmerizes you, nothing else matters. There is only the feeling of awe. And that draws us back again and again. Do you have a happy place like that? . While I know it is not the same, creating that happy place in your person’s (customer or employee) mind touches on emotions. We typically do not feel negative when in that place. Every business has a unique offer (or should) that the business owner feels close to. While it is about the other... person, not the business owner, if you feel strongly about something you can recreate the same feeling for someone else. That is called selling. . While we wish and hope our products or services sell themselves, they don’t. But you can create the stage and the scenery to get at least half way there. But don’t! If you are a small business owner, now is not the time to put up your feet! Business is changing ever so fast, as is the consumer. Times have changed, as they say. So many businesses, big or small, realize they were not well prepared for the changed environment we have faced in past months thanks to Covid. . You need to assess whether your business has adapted to this new environment and if so, if this is sustainable, long-term. Ask yourself, if there is another d...isruption in the economy, do you need to adjust your offer again or will your offer be threatened. Make a list of what you feel are opportunity areas within your business offer and ask yourself if these are worth researching today so you are prepared for tomorrow. . There is so much free or low cost marketing available; thank goodness for social media. But do not doze off. Now is the time to spend your energy, or hire someone, to create and organize any and all relevant tools to promote (and grow) your business. . For the many moving parts to evolving your business for today’s demand, be sure not to use lack of time as an excuse. That is tiring. If it costs a few dollars to make a few dollars, justify the expense of hiring the appropriate expertise (tax break). . Sit down today and compare your business to what it was 6 months ago. If you are not satisfied with the growth trajectory, consider my advice. So many small businesses have an advantage over bigger ones, especially if you are catering to your local area and your customers appreciate you. . Speaking of family, what about the kids? Are they obligated to participate or help with the family business? What do they, or will they, learn by watching you hustle? I learned a lot about hard work and commitment by watching, and helping, my dad with his business. First the chinchillas that I had to water once a day and then the horses that I helped feed (and ride) every day. I never questioned it. That was the life I knew. Yet, without consistency, one can barely succeed at anything. The way out is to first establish a daily routine of things you must do that will bring you closer to your goals. This saves you the stress of always thinking of what next to do everyday. Make sure your list isn't over-crowded, else you get tired just by looking at it. Then, do your best to stick to your routine daily, whether you feel like it or not. This is where discipline matters. Most times, you will have to take the action and allow your emotion to play catch-up. An accountability partner is also very helpful. Lastly, never miss two days in a row. This is the real deal. Truth is, no one is consistent 100% of the time. It's okay to miss once. But missing twice is the start of a new habit. Your ability to quickly bounce back is what makes all the difference. Indiscipline is the bedrock of inconsistency.
