containR by Springboard Performance 18.11.2020

containR brought to you by Springboard Performance does not condone the intolerance actualized through defacing of a BLM mural on our site. In the wake of this vandalism, our vision remains to connect communities through art and creative ideas. This includes many murals that express the perspectives of the community and the times, which in the wake of 2020 includes a number of BLM inspired murals. Art and artists can play an important part in a civic discussion, and can offer... expressions of art that can synthesize complicated realities through the art itself, that can surprise, reflect, provoke and inspire the community. Anonymous Artists who painted at Containr Site in Sunnyside: We strongly oppose and condemn any actions made to uphold white supremacy, be it from a private citizen, public servant, or institution. We acknowledge that systemic racism runs through the heart of Canadian institutions and Canadian culture beginning with the colonization, oppression and genocide of Indigenous people and cultures that continues to this day. We make artwork in solidarity with struggles for Black and Brown liberation catalyzed by the Black Lives Matter movement. The feeble attempt to erase the words "Black Lives Matter" from a public space underscores the fact that racism is very much alive and well in Calgary. We will continue to create artwork that strives to uplift and support marginalized communities. In the words of assassinated civil rights leader Medgar Evers, ‘You Can Kill a Man, but You Can’t Kill an Idea’. We thank everyone who has reached out and voiced concerns about the vandalism that has taken place on one of our murals. We are planning to go to the site today to see it in person and conceive ways to move forward. The containR vision is to connect communities through art and creative ideas which includes the inclusion of many murals that express the perspectives of the community and the times. In the wake of 2020, this includes a number of BLM inspired murals as well as paintings associated with community connection and self expression.

SATURDAY NIGHT!

containR by Springboard Performance 12.10.2020

Summer's not over yet at containR by Springboard Performance! Calgary filmmaker, Gary Burns, curates "Movie Nights with Gary Burns", featuring "films you shoul...d know". On September 18, come down to Containr Site in Sunnyside for an 8PM screening of "Le Samourai", directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. 101 minutes. In French with English subtitles. // About the Film // French director Jean-Pierre Melville made some of the most stylized movies in film history. In this one, often cited as the director’s best work, Alain Delon gives an ultra-cool performance as the silent hitman Jef. He is an absolute perfectionist in his field. He executes his assassinations with pre-planned precision until one day the slightest detail goes wrong and his entire world begins to unravel. Although on the surface this is a movie about a criminal, it is actually a movie about loneliness and solitude, and maybe about a man whose craft is becoming outdated in the modern world. The stripped-down elegance of the images is where the power really comes from. It is like a moving painting, all cast in cold blues and greys. Alain Delon’s performance is riveting and carried through without an ounce of emotion. The first ten minutes have no dialogue, allowing the movie to work its magic and start to transcend. This could be considered a cop movie, but in Melville’s world the criminal is more noble and ethical than any police force, and the film clearly chooses their side. Once again, a prime example of what can be achieved by leanness, rather than bloated explosive spectacle this flick brings humanity back home again.
