Winter Packages Rims and Tires vs. Tires Only. This is a conversation I have with many customers who call in, when looking to purchase winter tires for their car. I will almost always try to steer my customer towards purchasing a set of steel wheels to go along with the winter tires.... I will use the example my customer called in about their 2017 Jetta. The tire size they have is 225/45R17. Now depending on trim level and features you got when you go your car a Jetta can come with 3 different tire sizes. So in this example the customer wants 4 tires to put on their existing rims. So I will quote them out in this example with a set of Bridgestone. 225/45R17 for a Bridgestone Blizzak WS90 is 219$ per tire. Than, the customer needs to factor in the price of the swaps each season. Because the tires must be demounted and rebalanced each time they switch from winter to summer or vice versa they will pay between 80 - 120$ depending on the tire shop. Winter tires generally last 5 years so an average cost of ownership would look something like. 1008$ for the tire 800 for 10 swaps over 5 years. So it would roughly cost the customer 1800$ in the long term. Now if that same customer chose to get rims and tires that would open up several options. In this case we can go back to the 3 sizes that normally come on this Jetta, and in this case this car can also come with 205/55R16. Therefore I would be quoting the customer out on steel rims and Blizzak tires in this size instead. The breakdown would be as follows. 16" Steel Rim 59.99 Each 205/55R16 Bridgestone Blizzak = 169.99 per tire. = 1033 after taxes Now that these tires have their own dedicated rims, they do not need to be rebalanced or demounted every season, this will lower the cost of installing the tires every season. This generally costs between 40 - 60$ For 5 years of ownership your long term cost would be. 1033 + 400 = 1433 This would result in a long term savings of almost 400$
