CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR CONTEST WINNER! Back in November, I couldn't decide what to do with my office redesign. I put out a request for help through a contest which ended December 31st. I look forward to incorporating Michelle's ideas into my office redesign! You can check out her business CatNap Cottages Inc. if you have a furry feline who needs to be well cared for.

SMOKE DETECTORS My mom brought up a good observation the other day that she doesn't think about checking the expiration of her smoke detectors. I think for many people, they assume that they last forever. Not true. You get 10 YEARS out of them. Do you remember to swap out the batteries of the detectors each year? We have ones that are battery-backed up in case of power failure. Many people do, but most forget, leaving themselves vulnerable to those late-night false ala...rms or worse, ones that don't work when you need them to the most. Under new building code regulations, visual signalling is part of the smoke detectors setup. They take some getting used to. I recommend testing them regularly to get used to them. If you're a renter, make sure your landlords are providing a smoke detector per floor and/or outside of each bedroom. So take the time and check to make sure you're protected. Stay safe out there!

HOW MUCH DO YOU KNOW ABOUT MPAC AND YOUR HOME INSURANCE? Every year, I check my insurance, investments, memberships, etc. to ensure I actually need what I need, to see if I have the right coverage, and if I'm being charged properly. One thing that red flagged me this year was that my home insurance increased by $50. No explanation, but I noticed that my policy coverage limits had changed for Dwelling Building (Replacement Guarantee), Detached Private Structure, Personal Prop...erty (Replacement Cost), and Additional Living Expenses. Naturally, I called my insurance company to ask what was going on. They then emailed me a letter. It states, "...we periodically conduct dwelling evaluations using information obtained from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC)." What is interesting is that MPAC said they would not increase anyone's valuation and would use 2016 numbers. They only re-evaluate on a 4-year cycle. Read article link below. If they don't have correct information on file about your property, it costs you more for property taxes and home insurance. Make sure it's right! On a follow-up call, my insurance company didn't have the proper information on file for my home. A reduction is pending. I encourage you to assess your home insurance and ensure you're actually getting charged what you should be! https://www.mpac.ca//Understanding/AssessmentCycleandPhase
