Gotta love Vancouver COPE councillor Jean Swanson who asks an innocent question that gets to the heart of the problem with NDP's so-called 'Rent Freeze'

ICYMI - Some really great tenant-centred motions passed at #VancouverCityHall last week: 1. Council unanimously passed @mayorkennedystewart's motion "Protecting... Tenants - Taking Action Against Renovictions" with amendments by @councillorswanson @christineeboyle @ptfry to make it even stronger with protections for demovictions too. This motion builds on tenant protections won in Burnaby and New Westminster thanks to orgs like @bc_acorn, @bcgeu, New West Tenants Union. 2. Council unanimously adopted the SRO Revitalization Plan brought forward by staff - the recomendations adopted were also the result of years of organizng and pushing for housing justice in the downtown eastside by orgs like @dtes.sro.collab @ccapdtes and many more. 3. Council unanimously adopted motions from the city's Renters Advisory Committee to lobby the province for COVID rent debt forgiveness and to end the ban on "no pets" clauses that groups like @petsokbc have organized for. Big props to the mayor and counsellors who brought forward and passed these important motions and also the thousands of renters who have and continue to engage with these critical issues of housing justice. Learn more about what passed and what this means for renters at an info session on Saturday, Oct 31 at 11am. https://www.facebook.com/events/844590859648336

Join the Vancouver Tenants Union (VTU), Coalition of Progressive Electors (COPE), and the Downtown Eastside SRO Collaboratives for an info session on a number of important victories achieved for tenants at Vancouver City Hall this month. October 15th was a special day at Vancouver City Council for tenants rights. From City approving to spend $1 billion to purchase privately owned Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels in DTES and save them from gentrification, to they finally agr...eeing to step in directly, like Burnaby and New West municipalities have done, to implement not just strict anti-reno- and demoviction measures, but also look into a municipal mechanism for rent control tied to units in SROs as well as citywide. All of this done with unanimous votes from the typically divided Council and with report backs on implementation steps anticipated in 6 months! No more waiting around for the Province to follow through on its promise of stopping renovictions! To top it off, Council also passed motions to call on the Province to forgive Covid rents for tenants financially impacted by the pandemic, and to ban No Pets clauses in rental agreements, which has been acting as a major discrimination against renters. This is only the beginning. It is crucial that we take action now to build on this unprecedented success in order to ensure that permanent change occurs. None of the above would have happened without tenants organizing and it won’t be implemented without us either. The time to get involved is today! Learn more and join the next steps by joining our online info session on Saturday Oct 31st, 11am. [Event link coming soon] Speakers: Sara Sagaii, VTU organizer Wendy Pedersen, SRO Collaborative and tenants Jean Swanson, COPE Councillor Kari Michaels, VP of BC Government Employees Union (BCGEU) Other speakers TBA Check back for the full list of speakers!
