Two pictures of a measuring wheel. This unit measures in feet and inches and has a range of 9999.9 As the wheel turns the dial also turns and measures the distance. For me, I use this to measure length and widths of properties in case Google Earth doesn't have an updated picture of your property. Excellent equipment, tough construction.and made to last. Some people, this is a measuring wheel, to me, this is the wheel of fortune.
Good weather to finish the work week. Look out for tomorrow's weather system.
For most people out there your lawn has begun to show signs of what's in store for your lawn. For some, the lawn shows well with patches of vigorous growth and other areas needing more sun and warmer temperatures. For others, there are big bare patches and a lawn in serious need of something. If this is you and your lawn needs some work get your soil tested through http://www.omafra.gov.on.ca/eng/crops/resource/soillabs.htm or check out a home soil testing kit available at your local garden center.
How and when is a good time to apply fertilizer? Wait till the frost is out of the ground. To check for frost use a 5-6 inch spike and push into the ground. If you can push the spike into the ground 5 inches then your good to go since your grassroots are about 3 inches deep and will be able to grow. Next, check soil temperature with a temperature probe. Make sure, from different locations on your lawn, the temperature is 12.8 Celsius, 55 degrees Fahrenheit. or better. Other indicators its time to fertilizer is when the grass is growing, the Lilacs and the Forsythia shrub is in bloom. To apply the fertilizer use a rotary, drop cast or hand-held spreader for uniform application. For some as a rule of thumb apply fertilizer Easter weekend, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labor Day and Halloween for a 5 application of fertilizer.
City crews start leaf collection this week. Many homeowners have plenty of bags to collect since late fall clean up efforts were hampered by late seasonal frost, bitter cold temperatures, and timely snowfall. This is a good time to schedule any Spring leaf cleanup and any other jobs needing to be done.
Final thoughts on the lawn roller. This video explains everything about the KTR 30 Kesmac lawn roller. The KTR 30 portion of video starts after 1 minute 45 secs.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eTWC3zRctk
My last post I talked about the benefits of lawn rolling. Today I will talk about when to lawn roll. In the last 10 years on average I have started in the 2 or 3 week of April. By this time the ground has thawed and is workable to roll. Keep in mind you may still get very cold overnight temperatures which will effect your work so watch the extended weather forecast. One other thing. Make sure the ground is more then firm but not hard to walk on before rolling. Good luck
A few benefits in lawn rolling. Lawn rollers exert enough downward pressure on the ground to even out unsightly bumps and bulges. In preparation for seeding, roll lawn then seed, water and roll again to make sure seed has good contact with the ground. Lawn rolling only needs to be done once every 2-3 years. If compaction is a concern Aerate the lawn. I hope this information in the recent weeks has been helpful. In the near future a monthly newsletter will be posted with some interesting things.
Rolling your lawn will ensure that it will be smooth, firm and free of lumps. Call us today at 905-623-6804 to find out more!
Still waiting on the ground to dry up before attempting any Spring Cleanups. Looking forward to getting started. Just a heads up Durham Region starts their paper bag collection April 9/2019. Check your local listings for your collection day.
Very helpful information in growing seedlings.
Spring Tip: Straighten split Arborvitae Trees. Arborvitae Tees that have flopped over due to snow and ice should be straightened once the snow and ice have melted. Gently pull the trees upright and secure with ProLock available at Home Depot.
Early Spring Tip: Use heat mats for seeds. The best soil temperature for most seeds is in the 21 C . Use heat mats to keep seed starting soil warm. These electrical devices are placed under the seed-starting trays and keep the soil consistently warm while the seeds germinate.
