Are you ready? Cuz this is pretty big news. And we’ve had our share of big news before but, this might take the cake. It’s been a busy 11 years. We’ve expanded to 3 larger locations, opened a second shop in another town. We’ve been blessed with television opportunities and beautiful magazine spreads. I think it’s safe to toot the darn horn!! But, part of the reason I have been able to expand Coriander Girl in such dramatic ways is because I learned early on to get my butt ou...t from behind the counter and hire people who do things better than me. I take monumental risks. I live by the quote from Anais Nin ‘Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.’ Going for ‘it’ has never been a choice for me, it’s always a reflex. Coriander Girl Toronto was my first baby and over time, I stepped back and watched it evolve into this beautiful collective of sorts, a place for talented designers to come and try their hand at running a shop. I gave 100 percent control to the brilliant women I employed. And as these women grew and went on to open their own businesses, the next woman beneath her would take the stage. This model was an experiment and it wasn’t without it’s imperfections. Each manager quickly learned what they were capable of and naturally would want to do it for themselves. If you throw a stone in the Toronto flower scene, you’ll likely land on someone that managed or worked for Coriander Girl. Tellie from @huntandgatherfloral Chloe @shopflur Amira @kenilworthfloral Jaime @j_aime Jen @wildnorthflowers Dianne @thewildvine Lauren @timberlost Alexis @alexisjoyflorals Kristina from @minim_designs Jazmin @pictusgoods and Marilou @earlygreyfleurs I’m not taking credit for anyone’s success. I’m acknowledging the symbiotic relationship we shared and how they bestowed their talents on me and my business and I tried to provide a nurturing place for them to learn and grow. Coriander Girl has become the beautiful community it is today because of these phenomenally talented women. Cont’d in comments... See more

Coriander PEC is soooo ready to open again, whenever that may be. I’ve held off on curbside pick up for flowers because I have to go to Toronto and I’m not sure it’s wise to risk my dads health when I’m his primary caregiver. Nurse Ali. I hope you’ll stick with me and buy flowers again when we do re-open! Hopefully I can give you an idea soon for when that might be. Thanks petals. Xo

Just looking back at the first year we started growing dahlias. This year I lost every single last tuber to an unexpected freeze. I thought I had them in a safe place until I was ready to divide them. A great farmer once told me that I had to live by the old saying, ‘there’s always next year’ or I wouldn’t be able to withstand the trials and tribulations of farming. I’m going to shorten the length of time and say, there’s always next week. That feels better somehow. I’ve got fresh tubers on order and we’ll get it right this time or I won’t. I believe you really only learn from a good and honest fail. Multiple failures, now you’re really learning and when you’re learning, you’re winning. You see what I did there? You gotta spin it. Xo

Summer highlights. It wasn’t necessarily the summer I wanted but it ended up being the summer I needed. A global pandemic stopped the entire world in our tracks, and as we collectively sit still for a minute we have been further exposed to the ugly truths that plague humanity. Hate is as much a threat if not greater than any deadly virus. I have to believe that kindness will prevail but we have to challenge a system that is broken, remain active allies and keep showing up an...d unite ourselves against injustice every. single. time. This summer I faced my own personal challenges. I am forever grateful for a team that propels Coriander Girl forward and allows me the time to focus on my family and the flower farm. Thank you @thewildpansy_ for leading our Toronto crew, Emily @olwenfloral Harneet @art_is_heer and Hannah @sown___floral as well as @maddymarie.h thank you for your continued hard work during such challenging times. Thank you @marilou__perron for managing Picton along with the help of our newest team member @staceysproule and our ever faithful freelancers. Of course big shout outs to @corianderdad for everything you do. I don’t take for granted how fortunate I am that when most of the world was asked to stop, I had the luxury of doing so without too much grief. The front line workers have to keep showing up for us and all that we have to do is wear a mask and keep our distance. A pretty small sacrifice. This summer has left me with a boat load of souvenirs. Daily walks with my girls along Lake Ontario, pockets overflowing with heart rocks and 500 million year old gastropods. Bubble family love and al fresco dining. Lakeside fires and s’moreos, thanks Tara;) The early frost, wiping out all of our precious blooms reminds me to live fully in the present. To appreciate the impermanence of it all. Plan for the future but be right here, now. My discipline, try to live each day as though it’s an opportunity to fall in love with something and try to remain in gratitude. It’s hard for any negative emotion to co-exist alongside gratitude. Try it, you’ll be amazed. Hope your night is peaceful and you feel that there is much to be grateful for. Xo See more

Our friends over at @cucubaukids sent Hattie and Adeline the sweetest vintage dresses this week. So, I got my photo shoot on with my little ladies and I’m beyond excited to show you how dear these pics are. AND if you don’t know about this company you need to know. I’m not getting paid to say this, I genuinely want to shine a light on them and something I feel really strongly about. The time to start thinking about our ecological footprint has long passed, we need to take co...llective action today. Buying Vintage is one of the easiest ways to reduce our impact on Mother Earth. @cucubaukids curates the sweetest pieces, like these darling dresses so that you don’t have to spend hours roaming the aisles. THANK YOU! My girls had so much fun doing this. Can we just talk about these children for a minute??? My first born baby (Hattie) is growing into the most lovely, strong minded and compassionate human and her sister (Adeline) is following closely (basically attached) in her footsteps. I can’t believe how blessed I am, I get to be their mama...it’s an absolute gift. How fitting is it to post this on National Daughters Day?! See more

Dahlia lement. There’s still plenty of these darlings growing in other people’s gardens just not in mine. I can’t help but wonder if the frost happened for me because I couldn’t give them the attention they deserved. Isn’t that a lovely thought, the universe conspiring to help give me a break? I also like believing in a road already mapped for me but then I’m also on side for free will and choosing your own destiny. Somethings, some people are written in the stars. It’s comf...orting to think you can’t really screw it up. I just have to listen, learn and remain open to the journey, open to the path that awaits. I also really love the quote about when things feel like they’re falling apart, perhaps they’re just falling into place. Yea that’s good. Jack, there’s a fork in the road up ahead...it’s big. (If you guess this one you win a free $30 bouquet. Britt, you can’t play;) And for those of you who want to order those dahlias and other beauties we’re here for you all weekend! Have a good one dear hearts. Xo See more

That’s a wrap on the farmhouse exterior makeover! Thank you to #ColourtheCounty for making my creamy white farmhouse dreams come true. They aren’t on social media so DM me for details when you need a paint job done right. And a fun loving, kind group of people. Truly, Alessandro, Catherine and Danny are meticulous about the details. So. Much. Wood. and not a millimetre missed. Beauty shot by the incomparable @taramcmullenphoto #theduckpack

I’m still trying to metabolize the loss of all of our farm flowers. The killing frost came a month and a half early for me this year. I wasn’t at home to protect them. I’m not even sure I believed it was actually going to happen. My heart felt like it broke open. My dahlia beds, 500 tubers had just started to bloom last week. Much later than usual. The process starts back almost a year ago, digging up last years crop and storing them carefully for the winter. In Spring, if t...hey survived, we start sprouting them indoors in March! And then we wait. We water and we wait. Wait and water. Water some more...wait. When we’re confident the last frost has passed we get those suckers planted in the ground. If you’re a gambler like me, you plant them out earlier than you should and cross your fingers and toes that the weather gods are on your side. I’ve been very lucky until now. I should have known ‘when to fold ‘em.’ Or when to tarp ‘em;) but that’s the thing about nature, she’s wildly unpredictable. We had zinnias come on a month early so maybe it all checks out in the end. Sort of. Dahlias are twice the money maker that zinnias are. But again, you can’t cry over spilled tea, it’s not going to get the liquid back in the cup! So onward we go. Clean up will commence next week and then it’s time to plant the bulbs for next spring and our first annual tulip festival. That’s right! We’re going to party in the garden far away from each other among rows and rows of tulips. We’ll drink cordial and eat ambrosia salad. Wear your best hat and we’ll pretend we’re in Holland. Please keep the farmers in your thoughts tonight. September is too early for frost. The gardens are at the height of production. Thousands of dollars invested in dahlia tubers that literally just started blooming for me last week. My heart is aching for a loss I’m not ready for. You’re never ready but at least in October your bone tired and you concede to the season change. The killing frost could be tonight but collectively maybe the warmth of our hearts can hold it back just a little longer. Thinking of my flowering friends who do this on a much larger scale with so much more at stake. @floraloraflowers @mylusciousbackyard @dahliamayflowerfarm
