From our police liaison: I noticed that a few incidents of online marketing robberies have taken place recently. Please remind your watch groups to be as safe as possible when meeting people to purchase or sell items of value. The use of facemasks provides criminals with an added advantage they didn’t have before. There seems to have been about 5 residential entries since I’ve been away. During one daytime entry, the home owner was asleep in the home. She was not disturbed.

Recent Incident Below is a notice of a recent break in we received from our police liaison. ... Early this week a night time entry took place at a home in the vicinity of 9th line and 16th avenue. Both culprits were arrested and charged in relation to this entry. The primary motive for this entry seemed to have been to steal the vehicle that was parked on the driveway. What makes this entry different to the majority of break & enter entries that take place. Is that the suspects entered knowing people were home. The suspects were not armed or trying to confront the home owners during this entry. The suspects seemed to be attempting to discreetly obtain keys and other valuables left in plain sight. Upon hearing the sound of smashed glass, The alert suspects barricaded themselves in a room and called police immediately. This is what lead to the quick response and arrests. Hello Cornell Residents, We hope that you are keeping safe and well in these challenging times. We'd like to share some news about upcoming or planned events in Cornell this summer.... 1. The City of Markham as asked us not to engage in any neighbourhood clean up initiatives out of safety concerns. Therefore it is more important than ever that we all do our part to keep our neighbourhood clean. Please be vigilant in picking up garbage including those items that get blown about on garbage and recycling pick up days. 2. This upcoming weekend there will be no annual Cornell garage sale. Please consider using other platforms to sell, exchange and/or donate items that you are looking to remove from your home. 3. We have made the unfortunate decision to cancel our annual Cornell picnic in August. We hope to return better than ever in 2021! Again we hope that people are practicing proper techniques to keep yourselves, your family and our neighbourhood safe. As the weather warms we need to remember that each of our actions plays an important part in the health of the community. Please refer to York Regional Public Health york.ca/covid19 for more information. If anyone of our community is in need of resources or help please reach out to us. Hey everyone: IMPORTANT I am proud to share that my son Arjun and our Robotics team FRC Team 7902, is making a key component for PPE (Personal Protective Equi...pment) for face shields for healthcare workers. We in partnership with another Markham based team FRC Team 6866 and Technical Plastics Inc., of Markham are developing face shields for doctors and nurses. We have bought the 3D Printers and the design but we need to keep buying the filament from Amazon Canada, which will cost approximately $1000. Any money raised in excess of $1000 will be donated to Markham Stouffville Hospital. This initiative has been approved by the Markham Stouffville Hospital Foundation. Every little bit helps, so donate what you can. The link for the Go Fund Me is in the post below. Thank you for supporting the front line workers!!!

A Message from the Cornell Mews Skating Rink organizers: For the parents in the community, please pass along to your children that the Cornell Mews park skating rink is CLOSED until the caution tape goes down and the sign displays that the rink is safe to use. I live across the street from the park and have been exhausted going out several times a day to remind people they will destroy the rink for everyone if they go through the ice and pierce the plastic liner that holds ...the water in. I always get the same responses: -Other people were on here earlier so I thought it was ok. -I didn’t know it was closed (the caution tape you have to crawl under is a pretty good indicator - even if you can read the CLOSED sign) -It seemed fine so I just went on. The ice measured Saturday was 2.5 thick. It needs to be double that to open and be safe. If a single person goes through the ice, the liner will be damaged, all the water will leak out, and hundreds of man hours and planning and money will go out the window. It will ruin it for everyone in the community. It will also demoralize all the volunteers who dedicate a LOT of effort into these projects to the point we just won’t want to do this anymore if everyone ignores the signs. So PLEASE stay off the ice. My kids love it. Your kids love it. Let’s keep it going. Just be patient until it opens and we can all enjoy it.
