Ever see any icicles like these when things start to melt? If you did, other than the obvious safety issue of them falling, do you know what type of defect they may be an indicator of? Icicles like these could be a sign of some pretty serious ice damming issues, possibly caused by poor attic insulation or air circulation. Your attic should be cold during the winter. If it’s not, whether that be from warm air in your home escaping into the attic due to improper or inadequate ...insulation and then heating the roof surface from the inside out, or a lack of air circulation from the outside keeping the attic space cold, the result can be damage to your roof structure. As water melts on the heated roof surface, it runs down the outside. Then as it runs across the overhang and into the gutters, it cools and freezes. Damage to the gutter due to the weight is an obvious and immediate issue that could arise, but some of the ice that is formed can actually work its way back underneath the roof covering materials. Once this ice and water is under the shingles, it can potentially damage the roof sheathing, or even find its way into the attic and cause water damage inside the home. The moral of the story, while they may look whimsical and wintery, you should never take indicators like this lightly. If you see something like this, always get it checked out to help prevent any damage to your roof or the interior of you home structure. www.CornerstoneInspectionServices.ca

Carbon Monoxide is odourless and a true silent killer. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the exterior vents on your home, especially during frigidly cold temperatures like we are currently in the midst of right now. Blocked vents can prevent your home’s systems from working properly, and even worse, lead to dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide in your home. Everyone should install CO detectors in their home, at minimum, on every level of the home where someone sleeps. They should also be on every level, and preferably in close proximity, to any combustible fuel burning appliances like furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, etc. Detectors that cost less than $50 are a small investment when it comes to protecting the lives of you and your loved ones. Stay warm and stay safe.

Please remember, prevention is always the key to helping avoid costly emergency furnace repairs or replacements during frigid temperatures like we are experiencing right now. Stay warm everyone, and don’t forget to be thankful to the people working outdoors on days like today that help keep the lights and heat on. https://globalnews.ca//6406967/alberta-cold-snap-furnaces/
