Letter by my colleague Bradley Small: Dear Justin Trudeau, You may not remember me, but we spent a great deal of time together during the last election. For the... first 2 weeks of your campaign, I was assigned to be the Captain on the Boeing 737 that flew you around the country. I sincerely enjoyed getting to know you during that time. We had some great conversations and shared a few good laughs between flights. I remember feeling that we were in good hands, convinced that you were the right person to lead our government. Just as you trusted me and my co-pilot to fly you from one campaign stop to another, I trusted you with the future of our country. I proudly voted for you on October 21st, 2019. The pandemic struck 4 months later. The entire airline industry was mobilized to bring Canadians home from all around the world. At your request, pilots, flight attendants, and ground agents worked tirelessly and without protection to get the job done and bring everyone back safely. Once the mission was completed, borders closed, airplanes were grounded, airlines shut down and massive layoffs began. News quickly came of other nations pledging specific help for their aviation industry. One after the other, countries announced substantial financial support, recognizing the unprecedented and devastating impact of this crisis on our industry, acknowledging our crucial role in the economy and understanding the necessity to provide targeted aid. Almost a year into this and your government is the only one out of all G7 nations who has not announced any sectorial support. Instead, you chose to disregard our many cries for help, to ignore our anguish and our despair. Today, your attitude towards our industry has evolved into one of contempt, reproach and shame. You, the Liberal Party of Canada (Ontario) - Parti libéral du Canada (Ontario) and Omar Alghabra have completely abandoned us. Tens of thousands of pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, dispatchers, crew schedulers, gate agents, baggage handlers across the country are now jobless, completely hopeless. We are honest citizens, highly trained hardworking people who have contributed significantly to our society and economy throughout our careers. We simply do not deserve to be treated like this. Certainties are a rarity today. I don’t know if I’ll still have a job a month from now. I don’t know if my employer will be able to survive. I don’t know how many of my friends and colleagues will have lost their house and their retirement savings at the end of this. But I do know one thing, your inaction won’t be forgotten. #savecanadianaviation #wearealpa #brokenpromises
