Gelato one of our guilty pleasures. When in Italy , we indulge in it every day. It’s soooo tasty! To feel less guilty we found an excuse: gelato is not as sweet as regular ice-cream and portions are smaller than at home! We also walk a lot every single day. We need that energy! Buon appetito! . . .... . . It’s morning in Padova. Our last morning in Italy. Midday we’ll be on a virtual flight from Venice to Toronto. The emotions are high, and are very much mixed. They are not easy to describe. It’s sad to leave Italy. It’s sad to abandon our newly-adopted European lifestyle, strolling carefree on the cobblestone streets with a gelato in hand, taking hundreds of pictures a day, being with friends almost every minute of the day. It’s almost heartbreaking. But along with the... sadness we feel a sense of pride. We accomplished so much. We studied hard and we’ll get a credit. It really helped that our courses are 5 weeks long and our teachers ready to answer any question were there to help us along the way. We had enough time to study and be silly with our friends, to complete assignments and visit numerous historical sites. We’ll stop here because there is luggage to be packed. We are leaving Italy, but the memories we made here will never leave us. We’ll be back to Italy one day. We just know it . . . . . After spending a virtual (but still sunny!) day at the beach a couple of weeks ago, today is our return to beautiful Sottomarina di Chioggia . The shoreline of the Sottomarina is extensive. There are actually numerous beaches here, all with different names. You can also tell them apart by the umbrella colours all of them summery and bright. The beach staff open umbrellas for us, setting two beach beds underneath each, and a few minutes later we are all set. The beac...h days are very different from our other day trips. No busy schedule. Sunbathing , sipping on a slushy while reading a , swimming in the Adriatic Sea , walking along the beach with our friends. It's carefree, priceless, and we love it! Well, we'll finish here. You are more than welcome to join us next summer to experience it all for yourself, and hopefully IRL. . . . . . It’s hard to believe there's only one week left of our virtual visit to Italy . We are off to Verona, the last city to explore this summer. Verona is a vibrant city, bustling with tourists in the summer. We stand in the largest square Piazza Bra and admire the biggest amphitheatre in north Italy, Arena di Verona, just before going inside for a visit. Our next stop is at the house of Juliet. We take our own photos on the famous Juliet balcony and try to envision that ro...mantic moment between her and the love of her life. Next, we move on to one of the busiest squares in Verona, Piazza delle Erbe. We're surrounded by buildings with beautiful frescoed facades, and monuments dating back to the 14th century. It’s fun walking around, checking out the small market stands, and savouring a midmorning snack of fresh fruit under the sizzling sun. Here come our last 2 climbing challenges for the entire trip. First is the Lamberti Tower, We take photos from above of the historical centre we just explored. Second is the Piazzale Castel San Pietro. The panoramic views of the city, with the river Adige graciously winding through it, are absolutely stunning! On the way back to the historical centre we visit two beautiful churches: the largest of the many Verona churches, St. Anastasia; and Verona’s Cathedral, aka the Duomo Santa Maria Matricolare. It’s time to go home to Padova. We are at the end of our high school course. Next week will be busy, and we are all determined to do well! Wish us luck! Ciao! . . . . . Good morning Florence! We are a small part of the many virtual visitors this year, and this is our last day here. We start the day as planned: First, by climbing the Dome of the Cathedral and the Bell tower (the Giotto Tower) the view is worth every breath it takes to get to the top of each of them; it does take a lot of breaths Then a visit to the Baptistery of St. John (no climbing). It’s an octagonal structure with rich, mosaic decoration inside. ... Now it’s lunch time. We go to the Mercato Centrale. Remember the market we visited on Saturday? We’re back to the same place. The food there is unforgettable, and the numerous leather, clothing, and souvenir stands cannot be missed. Following lunch, we’re due for some downtime with our friends. We wander the streets of Florence, take more pictures, and do more shopping. It’s time to go back home to Padova. Buon viaggio to us! Tomorrow is a school day for all of us!Ciao! . . . . . Today is our virtual day trip from Florence to either Pisa or Siena. We like them both. We can’t decide which one is more interesting. For that reason, we keep switching every year. Luckily, since this year we are travelling virtually, we can visit them both! Pisa: We are at the busiest spot in the city: Piazza dei Miracoli (The Square of Miracles). There are the Leaning Tower of Pisa the world’s most famous leaning tower, the Pisa Cathedral, and the Pisa Baptistery. Our ...tickets for climbing the tower are not until the early afternoon, so we have just enough time to visit the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and check out the souvenir shops. Siena: We are in the main square, Piazza del Campo grand, semi-circular, sloping downward to the Tower of Mangia. If it’s not windy we’ll climb the tower; it’s a beautiful view of the city. We move on to visit the magnificent inside and out Cathedral of Siena, and continue to the Fortezza Medicea, which offers a great panoramic view of the city. Have you been to Pisa or Siena? Which one would you choose if you had a choice? We are already back to Florence. After dinner we rush to the Piazzale Michelangelo. Climbing the hill is worth every effort: the panoramic views of Florence are amazing, and the sunsets are absolutely spectacular! It’s been another looong day. Buona notte! P.S. The first 3 pictures are from Pisa, the next 3 from Siena, and the last 4 from Piazzale Michelangelo and Florence . . . . . All is set for our 3-day trip to Florence. Our visit is still virtual, but our schedule is as busy as usual. We arrive in Florence, check in to the hotel, and are ready to take on the city we’ve heard so much about. We go for a quick bite at the Central Market, a 3 min walk from our hotel. Then, we head to the stunning church complex that includes the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and the Bell Tower. We take a few photos, and only stay a short while. Our plan is to come back on... the 3rd day of our stay and visit all 3 parts of the complex. Next, passing by the Piazza della Repubblica, we arrive at the central square Piazza della Signoria. It’s big and it looks like an open-air museum with all of its statues. The imposing, fortress-like building in the central square is the Old Palace (Palazzo Vecchio). There, we take a guided tour: The Secret Passages of the Palazzo Vecchio. We won’t tell you much, because it is a secret! And it’s dinner time. Crossing the most famous bridge in Florence, Ponte Vecchio, we go to a quiet square across the Arno river to an authentic Italian restaurant. Right after dinner, it’s gelato time. Of course. It’s close to 9 pm now and we’re back at the central piazza. For a reason. Tourists, mixed with ordinary Italians, are gathered there waiting for the open-air concert. Some are standing, some are sitting on the ground, but all are excitedly anticipating the event. Well, now that the concert is over, it’s getting late and we’re tired, so we head back to the hotel. Buona notte that’s Italian for Good Night . . . . .
