If you are confused about why you can receive a massage in Toronto right now, but not a haircut, due to the Premier's and MOH's bungled representation of our (m...assage therapy) profession in his June 9 press conference, I can elucidate. When asked why by Global News, both the Premier and Minister of Health failed RMTs in not making the distinction that RMTs are governed and regulated at the provincial level, under the same legislation that governs 25+ health care professions in Ontario (the RHPA, which includes Physicians, Nurses, Dentists, Chiropractors, Physiotherapists, Optometrists, Psychologists, etc.). Though I'm sure Hair Stylists will have appropriate protocols in place, they have no such provincial regulation. This is why you can go for massage therapy treatment in Toronto right now, and not a haircut. As stated by our Association in Ontario, "The issue is not a matter of [physical] proximity but rather the ability of the [massage therapy] profession to assure the public that the profession operates within certain high standards that protect both the public and the providers." I hope everyone can get the haircut they've been waiting for soon! But to compare the two is comparing apples and oranges, and it's dismaying to our profession that our own Minister of Health could not make that distinction when asked.
