Are you an emerging writer? Check out our screenwriters' writing habits and tips and get inspired! Here are insights from M.J. Kang! Do you write during a certain time in the day/night? I try to write as much as possible throughout the day, whenever I can find the time. If not, I am up until the wee hours to write and also sometimes, I wake up in the middle of the night and write from 2AM-6AM.... What routines/exercises help you stay focused and help you work better? For me, the hardest part sometimes is starting to write. I think that's why I write the best in the wee hours of the night, when distractions are very limited - although now that I have friends from all over the world, I find there are always people up when I am. To help me start to write, I time myself for 25 minutes. I just tell myself to write for that long and usually, it propels to write for longer. Do you believe in writer's block? When you have writer's block, what helps you get back to writing? I believe in distractions and trying to limit distractions as much as possible. I think that's why the pandemic has been great for my writing time. I am doing nothing except staying at home right now so I find I have more time to write. Black History Month has come to an end. We are so honoured to highlight some of Canada's most talented Black female filmmakers! If you haven't, you should watch all the films mentioned! Alison Duke's Promise Me was the Winner of Outstanding Short Film Writer at @reelworld in 2020. Inspired by true events, she showcases how our imperfect social system takes a toll on marginalized communities through a story of a young woman and her sick mother. Alison co-founded OYA... Media Group and co-created the Canadian Screen Award-winning doc, Mr. Jane and Finch. Alison stood out in the male-dominant music video industry as a music video director in the 90s. Her first feature doc Raisin' Kane: A Rapumentary (2000) was the first of its kind to unveil Canada's underground Hip Hop scene. Her work often touches on social issues including HIV/AIDS, the environment, violent crime and homophobia. Read about Promise Me in our link in bio and follow her @therealgoldlox! Filmmaker and novelist Christene Browne was the first Black woman to write, produce and direct a dramatic feature film in Canada Another Planet (1999). Another Planet follows a young woman who wants to find her roots. She signs up for a Canada-West Africa exchange program, but before she goes, she has to work in Quebec on a pig farm. Raised in Regent Park, Toronto, Browne's most recent feature-length doc Farewell Regent (2019) gives a deeper view of gen...trification in the Regent Park community. The film shows the discomfort that longtime residents go through, while the community shifts from 100% social housing to a mixed-income community where condo units pop up one by one. Filmmaker Cazhhmere often gets asked "where are you from?" even though she is a 7th generation Canadian. It led her on a journey to finding out how her ancestors settled in Canada as early as the 1600s. In her documentary Deep Rooted (link below), Cazhhmere features family members who fought in World Wars, and who shined in fields as an athlete, politician and movie star. Cazhhmere's rich family history is a reminder that Black Canadians shaped Canadia...n history, and their legacies are to be remembered.
