Our #ArtifactoftheWeek is a newly accessioned artifact! This is a No.2 Construction Battalion hat pin. It was discovered on the TAAC grounds in Truro, NS. It wa...s previously suggested that the No. 2 Construction Battalion once practiced drills on the TAAC grounds. The discovery of this pin is proof that this was indeed the case. This pin is currently on display at the Truro Library, as part of the Historeum’s Remembrance Day display. See more

Photo of the Day for Nov. 2, 2020: The ship's bell from the Halifax Harbour ferry Rita Joe mid-harbour today. Constantly exposed to the elements as it is, it h...as acquired a beautiful coating of verdigris. The person, Rita Joe from Whycocomagh, Cape Breton, after whom the vessel is named, was a Mi'kmaw poet and songwriter dubbed and beloved by many as the Poet Laureate of the Mi'kmaq people. Thanks to Gerry Lunn. See more

Just discovered this wonderful ongoing webinar series by the Community Sector Council-NS: "Decolonization Learning Journey." The series aims to deepen understandings of Canada's shared history with Indigenous peoples, and to create dialogue, education spaces, and meaningful movement toward reconciliation. They have recordings of past sessions too! https://www.csc-ns.ca/decolonization-learning-journey/

Field postcards from Errol Shand, sent August 19, 1918. These were used by soldiers to communicate home without running into trouble with the censors, who read... every letter and checked for any detail that could give away troop movement or war plans. They were only allowed to circle the appropriate answers, no personal details. [ Image: Simple black and white text postcard, small Canadian crest. Text described below. CNSA members: Do you have any examples of authors researching in your archives when writing historical fiction? The Council of Nova Scotia Archives is partnering with the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia on a virtual writers' panel on historical fiction next Thursday, Nov. 26, at 7pm via Zoom. This partnership is made possible through Library and Archives Canada's Documentary Heritage Communities Program. If you have had authors use your collections for research, please get... in touch with our MemoryNS Coordinator, Lisa Snider, so she use it as an example in her talk!
