For Immediate Release November 9, 2020 City's Businesses to see relief from Provincial Tax Cut recommended by ... Mayor's Economic Recovery Task Force BRANTFORD, ON As a result of reductions announced in the 2020 Ontario budget tabled at Queen's Park on November 5th, businesses in Brantford are now positioned to save $6.8-million in provincial taxes. The reduction, lobbied for by several municipalities including the City of Brantford’s Mayor's Economic Recovery Task Force, applies to the provincial business education tax. As a result of last Thursday's budget, a majority of commercial and industrial properties in Brantford will benefit in 2021 from a 29.6% reduction in 2020 business education tax levels, and an estimated 9.2% reduction in total 2020 property tax levels including both municipal and education. Prior to this change, businesses in some parts of Ontario were charged a higher rate than businesses in other parts of Ontario. For example, in 2020, a business in Brantford would pay 1.25% in provincial business education tax, while the same type of business in Toronto was charged 0.98%, resulting in Brantford businesses shouldering an unfairly high provincial education tax burden compared to other municipalities with lower business education tax levels. This is certainly welcome news as it will provide much-needed financial assistance to hundreds of businesses continuing to recover from the challenging impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic," said Mayor Kevin Davis. "I know I speak for all of the Mayor’s Economic Recovery Task Force members in saying how encouraged we are that the provincial government is taking this action to help Brantford businesses in need.
