On behalf of Conservation Halton, progress is coming along!! Courtcliffe Park Creek Restoration - Week 3 Large-scale creek restoration of Bronte Creek and Mountsberg Creek continues in Courtcliffe Park! During week 3, the shape and form of the Mountsberg Creek channel was restored! R&M Construction machine operators rehabilitated the creek’s riffles, pools and meanders. The online pond on Mountsberg Creek was also restored. Within the existing footprint of the online pond a n...ew creek bank was installed to create a defined, healthy creek channel. The remaining footprint of the online pond was retrofitted into a floodplain wetland. An exciting component of this work was the use of sod mats (harvested plants and plant roots) along the edge of the newly installed creek bank. These sod mats/plants will help the creek bank stabilize and re-naturalize more quickly. On Bronte Creek this week, Trout Unlimited Canada and Conservation Halton staff completed a fish rescue. This rescue removed fish from the area where upcoming construction work will install the new bridge over Bronte Creek. Stay tuned for next week’s update on the project’s progress! Union Gas hopes to start installing their fencing today and will be leaving pathways open for crossing of park users. These pathway crossings should be available most of the time but on occasion they may need to bring equipment etc across and will temporarily close the access. They do not anticipate the closings to be for a large amount of time but have said that they will notify us if they do have to close access for an amount of time that may impact users (ie. For more than a day).

City of Hamilton donates Christmas Trees to Bronte Creek restoration project at Courtcliffe Park Your Christmas trees have been upcycled! This summer Conservation Halton staff and volunteers will repurpose used Christmas trees to re-build the banks of Bronte Creek. In areas where the creek has become too wide they will be installed to narrow the creek to a healthy width. How? The trees will placed against the existing creek bank, stacked on top of each other under water and a...nchored in place. Within two years they will fill with soil, plants will start growing on top of them and the plants’ roots will hold the Christmas trees in place. Voila! A new creek bank. This donation was initiated by the Courtcliffe Park Committee of volunteers and supported by local Hamilton Councillor for Ward 15 Judi Partridge and City of Hamilton staff. The Christmas trees came from curb side pick-up and the decorated Christmas trees lining King Street. Many thanks to Trout Unlimited Canada and the local Ted Knott Chapter of TUC, who will help with installation of the Christmas trees. If you are interested to volunteer to help with this project please contact Beth Anne Fischer at [email protected].
