The team at Covergalls couldn’t help but add our own version to the Bernie Sanders hand warming meme that’s gone viral in this past week! How did we do? @berniesanders all bundled up wearing a mask and big cozy mittens has been photoshopped into paintings, photos, movies and more! The now famous pair of mittens were created by Jen Ellis, a second grade teacher from Essex Junction, Vermont. Materials used include repurposed wool sweaters lined with fleece from recycled plast...ic bottles. Amazing! This brings up the important topic: sustainability. Repurposed fashion is becoming all the rage these days, as more and more people pay attention to the impact their purchases have on the environment. It’s not uncommon to see discarded single use masks on the streets these days. Concerns have risen on how single-use surgical masks cause enormous plastic waste and that environmentally friendly alternatives must be promoted. Choosing to wear a mask shouldn’t mean you have to choose between safety and sustainability. Masks are very important to our health and safety, so why not find a good-quality, reusable, sustainable mask? As the meme of Bernie Sanders and his mittens continues to go viral for the next couple days, it gives us a unique opportunity to discuss and share how our fashion choices can also be made sustainable... My name is Bailey, a graduate of Queen’s University in Kingston and a Geologist that has been working in the mining industry for over 10 years. I chose to pursue geology because of my love of the outdoors and my affinity for solving puzzles. It’s the perfect combination of problem solving and hands on sk...ills. My career has brought me all over Canada, beginning in Northern Ontario and now splitting my time between the Golden Triangle of British Columbia and the Oil Sands of Alberta. I am currently working for Tudor Gold on a large helicopter drill program defining our Goldstorm Resource. I first made contact with Covergalls back in 2013 and have been wearing their workwear ever since on every project I find myself at. It began when I started a new underground job in the Yukon and the smallest coveralls they could provide me were extremely oversized- so much so that I had to use elastic bands around my arms and legs in an attempt to make them fit. As anyone that has worked underground would know- loose clothing and misplaced reflective stripes around equipment is extremely dangerous. I am grateful to have found Alicia and her team- and a glimpse of hope that someone is thinking about the everyday challenges women face in industry. We still have a lot of work to do- but we’re getting there! I always had an interest in cars from a very young age as my grandfather and father are both motor mechanics with their own business. I spent a lot of time in garage with my father from a very young age and loved to get my hands dirty! I knew from a young age that there is where I wanted to be. ... I started college when I was 16 as my heart was set on being a mechanic. Scariest moment of my whole career would definitely be my first day walking into college wearing my overalls and safety boots on my feet and having a tool box in my hand. I didn’t know how I would be treated when I was picking a career as a mans job. But all I can say is I was treated with most respect and support since day one. I love to take part in motorsports. I take part in Hotrod racing in Waterford raceway. (Basically where you race cars on tracks). I've always had an interest in operating since my grandpa and my uncle had their own excavation companies, and I ran farm equipment as a teenager. A few years ago I started as a rock truck driver on Gold Rush, and I've been hooked on gold mining ever since. I love the challenge of maximizing efficiency and production, and moving up to run different equipment has been ver...y rewarding. This year I was offered a job on a crew where I've had more learning opportunities, and have been practicing my welding and getting lots of time wrenching. Working on camp away from home for six months can be challenging, and finding work in the off season as a woman is difficult, but I do believe the industry is improving as a whole. I've had to endure bullying and harassment from co-workers, but I've also had incredible people that have treated me as an equal and lifted me up. Since childhood I have always had a relationship with tools and manual creative work but I never thought that I end up as a welder . At a young age I understood that I can do and be anything I want to so I really like to try all the new things and challenge myself. It all started last year when I was searching for a good paying job. Everywh...ere was a problem with my young age and a lack of experience. This result surprisingly lead me to a welding course. My opinion is that in the welding industry your skill doesnt really depend on your age, sex or experience. I think it is a creative work where you can progress really fast or not at all. But there is also the rule - practice makes you perfect. It is now my first year as a welder and I need to say that I am really happy to be in this industry. I can travel the world and earn enough money. Its is a cliche but it is true. The beginning was hard but I think all the tradie ladies can agree on that. Some days you just install the pipes on the construction site and some days you are really busy welding. I don’t think that this is my final destination. I really like to put things on another level and I really do recommend the welding profession to all fearless women. If you are thinking about joining the industry I can recomend you one of my life rules - if you never try you never know It is blessing work for all the people who already experienced a job in the gastronomic field. Its time to give a well deserved shoutout to a #Bluecollarbabe for #WorkingGallWednesday Hi, Im Jessica aka @HVACjess and I am a Level 2 HVAC apprentice in British Columbia, Canada. I work with my dad and my brother in our small family biz @cam_cool_inc . We specialize in commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning in and around Vancouver. I basically got into the industry because of my family. Coming ...from a business administration background, it was always assumed I would stay in the office. However, after going out into the field to learn a few basics, I quickly found an appetite for being on the tools and registered as an apprentice in early 2018. Its been the absolute best decision for me! As I learn the trade, Ive been helping my dad and brother with installations, maintenance, and repairs/replacements and we touch a variety of industries. There is a LOT to learn and Im worried that I will never have the same knowledge and expertise my dad has accumulated over the last 40+ years!! I feel very lucky that Ive been met with very little adversity, as a woman in this trade. Everyone seems very supportive and wants to see me succeed. And the online HVAC community is super encouraging and engaging. It is my goal to keep sharing interesting and exciting posts to get more girls/women involved with the trades. I chose this lifestyle cause I wanted it, not just because I was born in a small oil town. Not because of my family legacy/tradition. Not because it was expected. I am the first women in my family over 75 years that works in the industry, and the speaks loud enough for itself. I can feel power..., confident and strength I never knew I had when I was young. The industry means thinking for yourself, thriving and achieving independence. I was always inspired watching women take part in a mans world and I knew I was going to be one of them. I wanted to show the superior gender and prove that I could do it too. Even after a long hard day of pipelining as a welder and laborer, it was a reward to myself for my soul. I knew every since I slipped on my first steel toes and hard hat that I will earn the respect and hats off attitude I so wanted and deserved. I am a hands on kind of women and I am proud of if. Life is what you make it out to be. Whether it’s cutting hair, business or busting your ass off all day. This is my path I’ve chosen and I couldn’t be any happier with what I’ve chosen. Meet this weeks #WorkingGallWednesday, the ever inspirational and bad-ass engineer @intotherockies Hi, Im Chantel and Im an account manager in oilfield chemical sales with a background in petroleum engineering. My job is to essentially solve some of the oilfields most complex problems for my customer, developing value added solutions that are both economically and operationally efficient. I chose petroleum engineering because the energy industry is evolving at an i...ncredible rate to meet the worlds energy demands and I wanted a career that would challenge me every day. When I first started out of school in Saskatchewan, I was the only woman in my role, ever, for any company in the area and not everyone knew how to react to my presence. But I asked a lot of questions and wasnt afraid to get dirty or work long hours and that dedication was appreciated by all the guys I worked with. The more complicated and unusual the problem, the more rewarding it is when I find the root cause and implement a solution. Some of the best days on the job are just me, my truck, and a test kit out. Not only that, she is also a level 1 firefighter and volunteer fire fighter in Denare Beach, Saskatchewan Shes currently employed as a Disaster Management Coordinator and has started her own consulting company K. That means its #WorkingGallWednesday This week we will be featuring @pinkfirewelds, a Welder/Fabricator from Manitoba My name is Jenna and I have been welding for three years now. It really saved my life. I was a college drop out, I had no clue what I wanted in life but I knew I had to do something. I worked odd jobs and tried to search for a bigger calling. Two girls at a beauty shop I worked at encouraged me to take welding. One had welded... before and the other knew of a government program to help me get back into school as a female going into a trade. Without those two, I wouldn't be where I am today. Thank you Jasmin and Chelsea. Just getting a job can be hard. I've been laughed at, one secretary thought I was applying for her job, you are questioned harder on your abilities and have to prove yourself more than others. You have to outweigh your cons with pros. Maybe you can't lift as much as others, but your blue print reading and fabrication skills are top notch. I don't mind proving myself, I enjoy it sometimes. I encourage all women to look into trades, there really is something for everyone. I chose to pursue an apprenticeship after falling out of touch with academics/lecture-style learning in high school, and realizing a job behind a desk would not suit me. I decided to try tech classes and quickly fell in love with mechanics and problem solving. I love working as a Millwright be...cause there is so much to learn and lots of opportunity to grow. Between general mechanics, welding, electrical, plumbing, hydraulics, rebuilds and breakdown repairs, this trade never gets old. Working in the skilled trades is not a walk in the park, but all the energy I invest into this line of work is returned. This career provides me satisfaction in knowing that my skill, knowledge and experience helps to keep machines running and production moving. Meet this weeks #WorkingGallWednesday, the Territory Sales Manager @sarahhelenakennedy Ive always been very interested in construction, mining development, and just plain old getting my hands dirty! Now even though I am not officially in a specific trade and my role may not be as physically demanding as the majority of the previous or any future working gals featured; I too have had to and still have to prove my abilities daily in a predominantly male lead industry! ...I was introduced to the construction and mining industry when I was very young - every day being intrigued by everything in it. Some of my first challenges were having to prove my concrete anchor and fastener expertise to many seasoned contractors and project managers in the field. Now being in the modular construction industry there is still always a need to stay on top of my game, even if its just to go to a site and simply identify that the ground isnt quite compacted enough to eliminate shifting during our northern winter months! My interests of being hands on doesnt stop at work, any chance I get at home to dig into a project that may get me using tools or equipment I jump at the challenge! I can honestly say my Covergalls PPE at home is much more beaten and used!!! My names Kay and my whole childhood I grew up in a wrecking yard and around heavy machinery, fell in love with anything big with a motor and a lot of power... When I found out about diesel electric and how they would take me on for an apprenticeship and let me try every trade since I wasnt 100% sure on what I wanted to do yet career wise, I was so overwhelmed how they took me in... with open arms for this amazing opportunity! Im still figuring out what to set myself on but every trade is amazing and I love them all! Some difficult patches I have came across was being 5 tall 110lbs, most locomotive parts are pretty heavy and Im not able to do every job by myself... but my coworkers are amazing and will drop everything to come lend me a hand when I need it! They also supply all sorts of equipment to help with the heavy equipment. Another struggle in the trades is finding PPE that fits but thank god for you galls and your awesome clothing I love how Im learning so much about this industry and definitely see myself more in the railroad career in the future!
