Thank you so much for your applications! We received hundreds of inquires and applications for Joy and Noella. Due to the volume of emails and since we are 100% volunteer based we will only be able to respond if you are one of the applicants we feel would be the best fit for Joy or Noella. Thank you so much for applying. We really appreciate that you are trying to adopt a rescue. There is a shortage of rescue dogs currently so we realize how frustrating it is currently to fi...nd a furry family member. Don’t give up hope! And please know that if you see another dog on our website we keep your applications on file so no need to reapply. Just send an email to [email protected] Dog bless!

Joy’s bio may change as we get to know CCR her better. *Comes with 6 weeks of pet insurance totalling $500. Joy (foster parent calls her Janet, which she responds very well to!) has really come out of her shell since she arrived at her fosters home. Janet loves loves loves to play with other dogs and is very affectionate with people. She loves being pet and hanging out on the couch, but prefers not to snuggle. She is an independent lady, but does love to sit in whichever room her humans are! She is happy to sit in the kitchen with me while I cook and loves coming up to bed! She will sleep all night in her own bed on the floor and will let you sleep in! Janet has just started to wag her tail when she is happy, which is so cute!!! It’s really amazing to see her come out of her shell while she has been with her fosters. Janet is not destructive in the house, and does not show any signs of separate anxiety. She is happy to go into her crate and will not bark or whine at all in her crate. She loves treats and snacks and is very food motivated, which has really helped with her training. Janet is active and likes to play but is also always down for a good couch nap. She is an absolute pleasure to foster. Janet is a sweet girl that would love to go for hikes in the country or just curl up by the fire. Janet definitely needs to have another dog in the home so she has someone to play with as well as another dog to look to, to give her confidence. If Joy sounds like the perfect fit for your household please head to our website at www.covetedcanines.org to fill out an application!

The latest Taco Tuesday Training Tip from Dan: It’s Taco Tuesday and you’re making tacos at home because self-care is important and you’re worth it! Sometimes when making tacos, you might accidentally set off your fire alarm. Do not panic, this will not affect the quality of your tacos! (unless you burned them of course, in which case I am so sad for you. If you were here I would buy or make you a taco) You may be tempted to take the batteries out so this doesn’t happen again..., but this would be dangerous, because now you have no warning if a fire starts. This is the same reason we don’t recommend punishing your dog for barking or growling: you are removing a warning that your dog is distressed in some way. If a dog suppresses their bark to avoid a reprimand, they will still be distressed and may try expressing it some other way, like with a bite. Removing the batteries from a fire alarm is dangerous because you are losing an advance warning of a fire. Preventing your dog from barking or growling removes an advance warning of potentially more problematic behavior, like a bite. Stay tuned for more ideas on how to enjoy my two favorite things: dogs and tacos! Next week, we’ll talk about what to do if your dog is scared of the fire alarm! See more

We are so excited to present our #ManagerMonday series, where week-by-week we’ll introduce you to the all-volunteer team that makes up Coveted Canines Rescue’s managerial team. There is so much teamwork, effort, sweat, and tears that go into animal rescue, and we think it’s time to recognize the people who make this engine run. Meet Syd! Sometimes known as Sydie, or Syd-Syd as our founder Carly has dubbed her, she is our Foster Manager extraordinaire. Among the newest additio...ns to the management team, Syd joined Coveted Canines Rescue as our Foster Manager in May of 2020. Though it’s only been a few months, she is already knee-deep in fundraising, brainstorming, and putting in the work with our wonderful team of fosters. If you have questions about fostering, or you’ve recently applied to become a foster, she’s usually the one you’ll hear back from, so give a huge thanks to this wonderful gal for all of the work she puts in. When Syd isn’t answering emails or working her 9-5, you can typically find her cuddled up with her 19-year old dog, Teddy Daisy Bunny (reason #49838 why young kids should absolutely have a say in pet naming), and a glass of wine the right way to live. For Syd, deserving dogs in need of love and salvation have always been a staple in her life. Now volunteering with CCR, she feels like she is finally giving back to the dogs who have given so much to her life. Though she’s only at the beginning of her time with us, she’s already felt that tug of love to each of our dogs, especially to DJ, whose sweet eyes remind her of a dog she once had in her life. Three cheers and one big tail wag for Syd! We couldn’t do this without you.

Today’s Taco Tuesday Training Tip from Dan of Golden Rule Dog Training: Taco Tuesday training tip: Dealing with taco induced sicknesss. It’s Taco Tuesday and you just ate so many tacos you feel bloated and sick to your stomach. That’s not wrong. Tacos are worth it, but you may not have as much energy as usual and now your dog is bored and frustrated. You can’t give your dog tacos because there’s usually seasonings that could make your dog ill. But you can give your dog a Kon...g(s) stuffed with some food, treats, peanut butter (without xylitol) and frozen, or a licky mat, or a snuffle mat to keep them occupied for a long time. You can also get a flirt pole. I think every dog owner should have a flirt pole! They’re a lot of fun for you and your dog. A flirt pole is like a giant cat toy, but for dogs. It’s a pole with a rope at one end, and a favorite toy hanging from the other end of the rope. You can order one online or make one yourself at home. The following web site has DIY instructions and a lot of games you can play, and behaviors you can teach: https://notesfromadogwalker.com/2012/04/24/flirt-pole/ The great thing about a flirt pole is you can wave it around the family room as your dog enthusiastically chases it while sitting on the couch on the edge of a taco induced food coma. Stay tuned for more tips on how to enjoy my two favorite things: dogs and tacos! #tacotuesday #tacos #trainingtips #dogtraining

Today’s Taco Tuesday Training Tip Topic: Pandemic induced separation anxiety Restaurants are now open for patios and limited indoor seating. It’s Tuesday, so naturally you either have dinner reservations for a local Mexican restaurant, or you're heading out for lunch, possibly to a taco truck to celebrate taco Tuesday. Now you need to leave your dog home alone for a couple hours, and you haven’t had to do that since the lockdowns started months ago. If your dog was already co...mfortable with you leaving before the pandemic, and you occasionally leave them alone while you get some groceries, your dog might be fine. Make sure you leave them something fun and long lasting just in case, like a Kong stuffed with treats, peanut butter, and frozen, or some puzzle games, a snuffle mat, and bully sticks. If your dog has started to develop some separation anxiety and is scared now when you leave, don’t go get tacos tonight. Taco Tuesday is a big deal, but it can wait a week or two until you’ve done some work teaching your dog to be comfortable with your absence. Get started on something called The yo yo game from the Karen Pryor Academy: https://www.clickertraining.com/node/1556 Stay tuned for more tips to help strengthen your relationship with your dogs and tacos! #TacoTuesday #TrainingTipTuesday

Dot’s success story Coveted Canines Rescue Dot’s new mom, Tara, believes that Dot was bred to breed. When her previous owner brought Dot into a shelter, she c...laimed that Dot was a stray while calling her by name. Despite being a young dog, about two years old, she had no fur left on her elbows, so Tara believes that she spent most of her life laying on concrete. Tara said, She was so broken Whatever happened in her life was awful and we had our doubts that she would ever be able to trust anybody." When Tara and her partner, Patrick, first met her, Dot was terrified. She was shaking to the point where Tara thought she would give herself a heart attack, she wouldn’t look at anyone, and she wedged herself in the furthest corner of the backseat of their car on their drive home. She was terrified when Tara took her on a walk, and very unsure of everything once she was brought inside. She wouldn’t eat treats, and when Tara tried to urge Dot up onto her designated spot on the couch, she acted like she had never been in a home before. After a few hours, she began to slowly explore her new home and reluctantly began accepting treats. After being with Tara and Patrick for a few months, Dot has improved drastically in many ways but still has her quirks and fears. She is scared of loud noises and sudden movements. But with lots of patience, love and training with the support of Coveted Canines Rescue, Dot is getting much better and comfortable with her new family. For a while Dot was anxious about car rides so Tara would sit in the back seat with her, but now Dot leaps into the car on her own. Because of their frequent drives to fun destinations, Dot knows most car rides have an amazing outcome. We’ve seen so much change in her already, says Tara. The most rewarding part for Tara is beginning and ending each day with a genuinely happy, loving and caring dog after doubting whether Dot would ever be able to trust anyone. They have seen so many improvements in the few months that they have been together, and Dot now has a proper home where she is shown unconditional love and affection. We forgot what our lives looked like without her. For every bag of EarthPup treats purchased, a portion of proceeds go towards helping rescue dogs like Dot at Coveted Canines Rescue

In honour of his birthday yesterday, we are so happy to share this precious pupdate on Spinks When I first met Spinks, he looked like a dog who was just utterly broken. There was a sadness in his eyes that was indescribable, and he was physically a mess. He had lost all the hair around his eyes, and looked depressed and weak. He snarled, barked, and aggressively lunged towards me at our first meeting - to the point that I called my parents afterwards and said, I might be ...in over my head on this one. But we had already committed to fostering him, so we showed up to the shelter the following week on January 25th, 2020... and the rest is history! It took all but a short car ride for him to know, he wasn’t going back there ever again! Spinks is a black lab + boxer mix, who turned 2 years old on September 5th! He is the most gentle, cuddly, loving, kissy, sucky, and happy boy who loves to destroy his toys, curl up on the couch in your arms, and be outside as long as it’s not too hot! He has completely transformed from a scared, aggressive, defensive dog - to an absolute cuddle-puddle, gentle, quietest and kindest 2 year old there is! Everyone who meets him falls in love right away, and I am very fortunate to get to spend every minute with my best-bubs! If you ever see Spinks out in the wild - be sure to say hey!! But please no treats or snacks ... as he has very sensitive allergies and tummy!

Meet Lovie Lovie, Petey and Chico #emptyontarioshelters *medical hold/not available for adoption These three adorable Shih Tzus were taken in by a shelter in Ontario when their human mama died. ... These 3 babies have experienced true horror but it has not affected their personalities. We are being vigilant about looking for signs of PTSD and are also carefully monitoring their separation from each other. So far the amazing foster parents caring for the pups have only had wonderful things to say about them. They are all pretty much perfect. Love their foster parents, are great on leash, eat well, don’t have accidents, and seem ok when left alone. Petey even went on a camping trip with his foster mom and dad. He immensely enjoyed the outdoors, hiking and frolicking in the wilderness. Lovie Lovie is the perfect pocket pet companion and is great in a condo. She just wants to be next to her foster mama for cuddles whenever possible giving many kisses. Chico is extremely connected to his foster mom and even our vet couldn’t believe the attachment so quickly after being pulled from the shelter. Lovie, Chico and Petey all seem to be a bit itchy so allergies may become a concern in the future. They are all eating a duck and sweet potato formula while being monitored. Their ear infections are clearing up and we are just waiting for fecal and blood results before placing them up for adoption. This is what being a foster parent is all about. Taking traumatized fur babies, giving them stability and love - a soft place to lay their heads to recover from the pain and suffering many of us could never imagine. Thank goodness such people exist. We know that Lovie, Petey and Chico couldn’t agree more.

The wonderful and knowledgeable Dr. Steede, of Toronto Downtown Animal Hospital , has written us some tips! Here’s her first one about vet vetting: Finding a good veterinarian involves many things. Internet reviews can be misleading but word of mouth from friends and colleagues can mean a lot. Communication is key. A veterinary client relationship is about how that veterinarian interacts with your pet but also how they interact with you. Ultimately you have to make decision...s in your pets interest and you need to feel comfortable enough to ask questions and feel that your questions are being answered. If you understand why recommendations are being made, it helps build trust between you and your veterinarian. Pets can be nervous at the veterinary clinic but you need to know that the veterinarian and their team is working hard to make them as comfortable as possible. For this reason finding a clinic or practitioner that is fear free certified may be beneficial for you. Fear free certification is centered around making veterinary visits less stressful and with rescue pets this can be very extremely important. See more
