Of the total funding, $5 million goes to research, awareness raising and education activities, including capacity-building training and pilot projects. In addition, over 40 Indigenous organizations have received additional support of approximately $500,000 in total to address the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on restorative justice initiatives in their communities.

The federally recognized tribe on Kupreanof Island, south of Juneau, said it was alarmed by the low supply and high price of fresh meat that followed the outbreak of COVID-19. The hunt was approved in June, but Alaska filed a lawsuit alleging federal officials illegally preempted the state’s rights to manage wildlife. Kake Tribal President Joel Jackson said Alaska Natives never voluntarily ceded hunting and fishing rights on their traditional homelands and that he considers the matter an issue of tribal sovereignty.

There are now 60 active cases in the territory. Nunavut's Health Department said Tuesday that an additional 26 cases have been confirmed in Arviat, a community of about 2,800 in western Nunavut. That brings the total in Arviat to 46. Nunavut is to enter a territory-wide lockdown Wednesday. Schools and non-essential businesses are being closed for two weeks.

Implementing a two-week lockdown won’t cure the problem, but we’re trying to flatten the curve somewhat, said Cumberland House Cree Nation Chief Rene Chaboyer. On Monday, the Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) reported 258 active COVID-19 cases in its communities, a significant jump from the 168 it reported on Nov. 16. NITHA is comprised of Prince Albert Grand Council, Meadow Lake Tribal Council, Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN), and Lac La Ronge Indian Band.
