It was a foggy start to the Thetis Island Elementary School (TIES) beach clean-up today. The annual event sees the students of our one-room schoolhouse head outside to help keep their beautiful island clean. With the help of two special aquatic guests, large items were dragged out of the depths of the ocean and surfaced. An old bar-b-que, trailer tire, car battery, and an old crab trap were a few of the larger items found near the public dock. The grade 7 students were ready ...and eager to help our two divers get the large junk out of the water. While the Grade 7's were busy looking for ‘treasures’ the K-6 students went spent most of their time along the shoreline fetching various items from the beach. A few students found a large rug, mostly buried in the sand, and quickly took to freeing it. Between scraps of paper and old shoes, the beach was left in tip-top shape. A closer inspection of the items that were brought up from the deep warranted a bit of a biology lesson when some stowaways were found on the garbage. A huge thank you to our volunteer marine biologists for the impromptu lesson. A special thank you to all of our students, staff, and special volunteers who helped ensure a successful and safe clean up. See more

Yesterday, students at our one-room schoolhouse, Thetis Island Elementary School, were treated to a visit from a very special guest. Florence James from Penelakut came to the school to teach the students about the importance of Orange Shirt Day, tell stories of her growing up on Penelakut, and sing some songs with the students. Florence’s teachings were based in the history of the two closely connected islands and her and her own family’s history and stories from there. We ...are grateful for the time that Florence’s was able to spend with us and the teachings she shared. Thetis Island Elementary School is the District’s only one-room schoolhouse and this year it is celebrating its centennial. We’ll bring you more from the celebrations over the year.
