Some exciting news to share! Some of the Gwich'in's strongest Congressional allies just introduced legislation in the U.S. House and Senate to restore protection to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. There's still a long, long way to go, but it's exciting to be working to rebuild protections for the Arctic Refuge! Here's part of the statement from the Gwich'in Steering Committee on the news: "On behalf of the Gwich'in Nation, we thank our congressional leaders for listening... to the voice of Indigenous people, said Bernadette Demientieff, Executive Director of the Gwich’in Steering Committee. We have fought hard to protect these lands and the Porcupine caribou herd, trusting the guidance of our ancestors and elders. It is important for our young people to see honorable and humble people in leadership respecting our human rights and Indigenous voices and to know we are being heard. The Gwich'in have a spiritual and cultural connection to the Porcupine caribou that spans thousands of years. Our way of life, our survival is interconnected to the land, water and animals. So today we say Mashi’ choo Shalak naii (thank you very much my relatives) and to all who stand with the Gwich'in Nation." See more

A policy for wetlands would address concerns of threatened wildlife and ecosystems that aren't found anywhere else, while also creating greater certainty for miners. The Mineral Development Strategy can help put us on the right track, which is one reason why you should submit comments on the draft Strategy. If you need more info about it, check out one of our upcoming events!

The Shadow of Gold follows the glimmering metal to its dimmest corners. You'll travel from Peru to London, the Congo to Canada and China to Dubai, and uncover some of the human stories intertwined in the international gold trade. CPAWS Yukon is hosting an in-person screening on Sunday, alongside a conversation about the Yukon Mineral Development Strategy and what we can do to reimagine how mining happens in the north. SCREENING DETAILS: Sunday Feb 7th, 4 PM at the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre. Tickets available at Eventivelink in comments.

The awesome Peter Mather Photography's pandemic project was to highlight the foxes around Whitehorse. It's a great reminder that "this is their city too"
