Spooktacular Volunteers will be present at Knox tonight beginning at 6:30 to provide essentials and candy to the community tonight. We will be taking every precaution to provide the safest interactions possible. Have a safe Halloween Central Park area!!
Thank you @winnipegfreepress !!! Fred Thomas is a stay-at-home dad by day, but every weekend, he’s a volunteer downtown. The 55-year-old is a member of the Central Park Foot Patrol, a non-profit organization that aims to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors in the community of Central Park. Foot patrol volunteers walk throughout the neighbourhood a triangle-shaped area bordered by Notre Dame Avenue to the north, Ellice Avenue to the south and Balmoral Stre...et to the west every Friday and Saturday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Patrollers provide a friendly, helpful presence in the area by supporting community members in need, disposing of harmful objects like needles and broken glass, and handing out sandwiches and water to folks who are hungry. The most enjoyable part of volunteering with the patrol is interacting with community members and other volunteers, says Thomas, who lives by the seven sacred teachings of his Indigenous heritage: love, respect, courage, honesty, wisdom, humility and truth. "I try to practise the seven teachings within the patrol," he says. "Everybody’s born with those teachings. Nobody’s born to hate. That’s why I’m out there. We’re exhibiting our love for the people and the community." For Shena Alcock, volunteering with the foot patrol has been an opportunity to assist others in a neighbourhood she cares about. The 62-year-old participates in a number of groups that meet at Knox United Church, which is located across from Central Park. When the patrol was launched last year, getting involved just made sense. "I think the patrol provides a really valuable service to the community," Alcock says. "I really like it because it’s rewarding. It’s always gratifying helping people." Alcock has volunteered at a few different places over the years. It’s something she started doing when her anxiety and depression prevented her from working for an extended period of time. I didn’t want to do nothing at all, so I thought I’d do volunteering," she says. "It didn’t matter to me that I wasn’t getting paid. You get paid in different ways, though. People are usually very appreciative of volunteers, so that’s a reward in itself."
Happy Friday!! Fall is here and it’s perfect weather for patrol. Volunteers will be out this evening. If you see them, say hello #harmreduction #communityfirst #centralparkwpg
