#Survivors See Hitchhiker's scarring from entanglement. Did you know that dead whales most often sink to the bottom of the ocean? Unseen. Unknown*. The knowled...ge of what killed them disappearing with them. It is our experience that too many people do not realize this which leads to significant underestimation of the severity of the threats of collision and entanglement. Thinking often appears to be along the lines of . . . if many whales died, there would be lots of bodies. No. It's what motivates our studies to look at the evidence in survivors. The preliminary results of our study on entanglement scarring in Humpbacks indicate that approximately 50% have scarring showing they have survived one or more entanglement = that's a serious problem (research is conducted in collaboration with DFO). It's what motivates us to share the stories of survivors like Hitchhiker. May their injuries compel more boaters to care and to learn about how to reduce threats. See www.mersociety.org/education. Note that it is federal law that entanglement and collision must be reported. In BC to the Incident Reporting Line 1-800-465-4336. Thank you to all who help spread the education. With very great thanks to Greg Shea for documenting Hitchhiker's injuries and to Maese Shea for suggesting the nickname which helps us recognize this whale. Hitchhiker is a great nickname "because on the notch of the fluke it looks like the sign you make with your hands when you are hitchhiking" and the shape of the dorsal fin looks rather thumb-like too. ____________________________ *An exception is for members of Orca populations whose social structure is that they are always together. If that is the case, the absence of an individual from the family / matriline = the knowledge that they are dead. #BoaterEducation #BoatBlue #ForTheWhales #SeeABlowGoSlow

HI, any of you know what this is? Found on an old logging road near Fourth Lake, Nanaimo. The fins at the top pivot but the bottom doesn't spin, and it's not because it's seized. About 9' high, 3.5' diameter.

Chaque geste compte. Ça va bien aller

#ThrowbackThursday before lifejackets were an enforced law: In Canada, lifejacket wearing and their onboard availability became law in 1906. In 2001, Transpor...t Canada re-wrote the law and gave the Coast Guard and the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans authority to warn and give out fines to transgressers on the water. Most fatalities on the water are caused by falling off the vessel without wearing PFDs. See more

Howdy All, not a lost dog but my 17' Whitehall Row Boat which is a Double Ender White in colour, Lapstrake Fiberglass hull, one set of Oar Locks, 3 wooden seats... and and decking on both ends. I went for a walkabout in the last few days normally kept at a water access point on Sea Drive behind the old Church. If any one has seen it or knows of its whereabouts I'm offering a $200.00 reward no questions asked. I have owned this boat for over 40 years and I use it regularly, it is quite dirty and beaten up, but she is like an old friend any help is appreciated! I did do a tour of Todd inlet and all around Brentwood Bay down as far as McKenzie Bight and over to Bamberton then back to the point off Senanious Island, and all the marinas, via Zodiac....and no sign, there were strong SE breezes during this time period so maybe she is further afloat. A rather morbid tale, a few years ago a boat dweller off Willis Point fell in the Water and drowned, his body was found a week later in Sansum Narrows, so wind and tide can be very interesting in our parts! 250-888-8821 Tim Knight

We, the staff and management of Signature Yachts, are deeply saddened to report that our founder, leader and cherished friend, Robbie Robinson, died peacefully... at his Seattle home Sunday morning (September 15, 2019) in the presence of family and friends, ending his battle with cancer. He was 61 years old. The personal loss we all share is leavened by the knowledge that he has left us a great legacy of achievement, integrity and dedication in our industry. We will have more about his remarkable life soon. Even as his health failed, he carefully laid the foundation for ensuring that the Signature Yachts Team will remain on the job, continue representing our outstanding brands, and continue to uphold the high standards he set and exemplified for each of us. There are no immediate plans for memorial services. He asks that anyone wishing to honor his life can do so with a donation to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, Mercy Corp, ACLU, and Habitat For Humanity.

From Wanita and Larry Meed: "This is the Fortress FX37 that I won in a silent auction at the National Conference in Sherbrooke. It paid for itself as our second...ary anchored during Hurricane Dorion on 20' of chain with a kellet and 90' of line. Our main anchor is a Rocna 55lb on all chain 125' and our 3rd anchor was a 45lb CQR on 125' of rode as we didn't have any more chain. We were in 10' of water with a surge of 2' with a thick mud bottom. Mud all over the deck post retrieval! Yeck! We also had 2, 1" nylon stern lines 100' each going off 30 to trees. 2 mid ship lines, 3/4" double braided and the other of jib sheets tied together with a double sheet bend and cable ties. Cable ties were used to secure each bend or knot. We are looking forward to buying new jib sheets " Near Orangedale, Bras d'Or Lake, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Fortress Anchors See more

News from British Columbia: Heres an up close and personal look at our Search and Rescue skills in action, with footage from Junes World Maritime Rescue Cong...ress opening day Search and Rescue demonstrations. In this exercise, crews worked with partners in the air and on the water to simulate how we would respond to a person overboard in Vancouvers Coal Harbour. It offers a glimpse of some of the marine rescue resources and procedures that we have at the ready 24/7, 365 days a year to aid mariners in Canada. See more
