FOR RELAXING TIMES...

Crafty Cocktails 13.02.2021

WATERFALL All at the same time, nature can be both extremely peaceful and abundantly dynamic. The waterfall is a singular example of this. Sit by one for a while and your thoughts are lost into the air like the mist that sprays off the rocks. But fall over or into one and you are in for a world of hurt as you thrash against the current and fight to stay afloat. This cocktail has similar qualities; light and flavourful ingredients like sake syrup and cantaloupe/shiso infused... cream are approachable and easy drinking. But beneath its friendly exterior lurks the driving force of whisky, looking to carry you far downriver if you’re not careful. There is beauty in this dichotomy and if you walk the precipice of this cocktail carefully, the true nature of this drink will be revealed. The Waterfall is the star in our Japanese Whisky box "For a Relaxing Time..." and is sure to be a fan favorite. It's instantly become a staff pick. You don't want to miss this highly potable libation!

It's new cocktail box day! Our feature box for March is here. We have been dying to work with Japanese Whisky for quite some time but also wanted to ensure our execution was as judicious as it was exacting for this wonderful spirit that commands respect. This box is, in essence, an attempt to emulate Japanese whisky itself; know the product, keep it simple, and execute properly. The result is one of the most exciting boxes to come out of the Crafty’s vault, so we hope you enjoy this month’s feature ‘For Relaxing Times’ because we sure had a fun time creating it. Available now for purchase on our website, shipping in early March. Stay tuned for individual features on each cocktail in this excellent box. Kanpai!

Winter Daiquiris Anyone? In the world of cocktails, daiquiris seem to have a case of split personality. On the one hand, they appear on the menus of chain restaurants everywhere, usually in the form of goopy, over-sweetened, neon slush made from a carton of artificially flavoured syrup. On the other, in their most authentic form, they are an extremely simple, yet balanced cocktail; refreshing, boozy and a perfect canvas on which to add many different flavours and layers. As y...ou may be able to tell by the tone of those descriptions, we at Crafty’s definitely prefer one style over the other. At this point, our inspiration for this month’s box 'TO BE OR DAIQUIRI?' should be fairly obvious; to clear up any misconceptions there may be about what daiquiris are and to showcase the potential they have for incorporating a plethora of tasty and unique ingredients. The Femme Fatale Daiquiri sticks close to the tropical roots of the original drink, incorporating tiki elements such as lime and falernum syrup, spiced with ginger and clove, all layered against the complex herbal profile of aged Panamanian rum and a fragrant absinthe mist. The Panama Libre Daiquiri takes the profile of a simple rum and Coke, also known as a Cuba Libre, and gives it a craft cocktail make-over. Ms. Better Kola bitters, raw sugar, lemon and herbaceous dried sage all come together to create a cocktail that has a familiar profile, but a much more complex depth of flavour. The Balmy Toddy Daiquiri will transport your taste buds to wherever you want to go. These ingredients can have many different associations for people; the warm, spicy taste of Hot Toddy syrup, the tropical notes of rum punch cherries, the malty sweetness of fresh orange, the boozy bite of aged Panama rum. Where you go all depends on where you started your relationship with these ingredients. So put down the blender, throw away your bright green bottle of ‘daiquiri mix’, your Crafty’s box for February 'TO BE OR DAIQUIRI?' is here to help you explore the world of authentic daquiris with a box full of fun and unique ingredients that are sure to have you rethinking your next daiquiri order while out on the town. The new Akvavit box may be Duncan's masterpiece. The selection of unique ingredients in this box are gobsmacking. This Scandinavian spirit may be a little unusual at first glance but it's truly become one of our favorites. The recommended brand for this box is Linie. The Linie recipe, with its delicate and perfectly balanced profile of dill, caraway, and a special blend of Nordic herbs, has not been changed in over 200 years. Starting with a clean, premium-distilled potato-b...ased spirit (vodka) as its base, and flavoured with Linie’s signature botanical blend, the truly unique stage of Linie’s production begins during its aging process. For 14-16 months, it is stored in Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks and shipped on boats twice around the equator. The result is a spirit that is extremely smooth, with bold, but not overpowering flavours of caraway, dill, anise, vanilla, orange peel and oak. A truly unique spirit for a truly unique box, the "Skál Fyrir Akvavit" is not to be missed. See more

Our new cocktail box for January is here and it's truly something special! Akvavit (Scandinavian Gin) Skál! While it remains relatively obscure in North American cocktail culture, the potential for the use ofAkvavitin cocktails should not be underestimated. While similar to gin in distillation and flavouring process, this quintessential Scandinavian spirit exhibits a profile which is quite different from the recognizable flavour of juniper berry in standard Gins, as caraway... and dill are the main flavouring agents here. Though this combination is as pungent as it is unique, a good Akvavit is as balanced and as smooth as any Gin out there, and if treated with care and approached with a keen palette, it can result in some truly amazing cocktails. This is what you will find in this month’s box, featuring three unique cocktails which will get you much better acquainted with this little-known spirit. TheAsgardian Brewis a hot, steamy tea packed with a ton of flavours. Akvavit, mandarin, licorice root, cardamom and a whole plethora of other ingredients are present here. This drink features a fun and easy prep recipe which makes it effortless for you to reheat and serve this cocktail whenever you’re feeling cold. The Skrytio, like Akvavit itself, appears strange on the surface, but in actuality, it is extremely balanced and delicious. Featuring a variety of seemingly weird ingredients; sea buckthorn, carrot juice, muddled dehydrated orange, Regan’s No. 6 Orange Bitters and Icelandic moss, this vibrantly orange cocktail is beautiful, extremely well balanced and will surprise you in all the right ways. TheCrafty’s Winter A&Tputs a Scandinavian winter twist on an English summer classic (The Gin & Tonic). The fragrant notes of caraway and dill are extremely present here, complimented by a warming background of clove, allspice, chinchona bark and star anise from Jimmy Tony’s Warm Winter Spice Tonic, while the fresh aromatics of orange zest and cinnamon bubble off the effervescent soda. Winter never tasted so refreshing. So indulge your tastebuds and explore the complex flavour profile of Akvavit with January’s Crafty Cocktails box, 'Skál fyrir Akvavit'. See more

Just because this month’s Crafty Cocktails box has deep, warming winter flavours at its core, doesn’t mean that some of the drinks can’t be light and refreshing at the same time. The Sparkling Pear truly resides in both realms, as the deep caramel sweetness of brandy, demerara syrup and golden mulberries combines with tangy and invigorating Bartlett pear juice and a touch of bubbles. The deeper flavours are reminiscent of winter and what we tend to enjoy during this season, w...hile the lighter elements add a lively and effervescent feel that keep this cocktail smooth and easy drinking. This drink may have it all but try not to have all of them; sharing is in the spirit of the holidays! Also we want to give a special thanks to @merchantbarber2020 for allowing us to shoot these images in their amazing shop in Nelson BC. This classic barshop veneer provided the perfect setting for our warm collection of holiday cocktails. If you're in the Nelson area stop in and get your wig split from these fine folks! Our A Cider A Day box brings out many different qualities found within a good traditional dry apple cider and hopefully will help drinkers appreciate the complexities of flavour which are concealed within this seemingly simple, yet wonderfully intricate brew. The Crooked Stone Cider enhances the dry notes of apple cider with the addition of tart plum, sweet MOB honey, sour lemon and herbal Rootbeer/plum bitters from Bittered Sling. A creamy egg white head adds a layer of ri...ch decadence that greatly compliments the overall profile of this drink. The Alpine Meadow Cider brings out the lighter, more floral flavours of apple cider with fragrant and floral hit of KVAS wildflower/ginger syrup and orange blossom/rose water, while the zing of fresh ginger a lemon provide a spicy and lasting finish. The Crimson Needles Cider plays with the tart and sweet side of apple cider, with flavours synonymous with winter, such as cranberry, rosemary and honey. Warm in its colour and its flavour profile, this cocktail will keep you cozy on any cold winter night

Cider Cocktails anyone? All across Canada, the stills of countess cideries are working at full capacity, turning the bushels and bushels of apples from this autumn’s harvest into delightfully crisp, bright and fresh apple cider. This is nothing new however, as cider is among some of the oldest fermented beverages in human history, its first use being documented in Europe and the Near East, where apple harvesting has long been practiced. While the prevalence of craft ciders h...as exploded in recent years, with a whole host of wonderful cideries producing delicious products in all sorts of flavours, it is important to remember where it all started, with the simple, yet wonderfully nuanced flavour of a quality apple cider. That is the inspiration behind this month’s box "A Cider a Day", which incorporates many of the ingredients commonly associated with flavoured ciders, but presents them in fun, easy to make craft cocktail recipes, all anchored by the unique taste of traditional dry apple cider See more

The Crafty Shaft While the origins of this classic Canadian cocktail are widely debated (was it invented in Calgary or Victoria?), the reasons for its popularity are undeniable. Need a pick-me-up before you head out for a night of partying? How about something to shake off the cobwebs of the morning hangover and enjoy your Sunday brunch? Or perhaps a little liquid courage and pep before you hit the slopes? There are so many reasons for the wonderful combination of alcohol and... caffeine, not to mention they taste great together. The sweet, warming character of Bourbon takes the place of vodka in the Crafty’s Shaft, a welcome change for any whiskey lover. A rich, syrupy layer of 1883 Irish Cream syrup provides a creamy mouthfeel, while Ms. Better Smoke and Oak bitters provides a deep, rich background for the caffeine kick of Nitro Bros. Cold Brew that every Shaft recipe needs. Sip it slowly or put a straw in it and shoot it back, just get it into you. The 2nd recipe in our upcoming Bourbon box See more
