The history of Cranbrook’s fire brigade is a story of stops and starts. Despite the fact that the first hotel was completed in 1897 and the town quickly grew around it, we didn’t have a fully-functioning fire brigade until 1904, when Cranbrook officially became a city. Attempts were made several times over the years. In 1899 three fire wardens were elected to find and report potential fire risks, but none of them were equipped to actually fight fires. A fire hose was also pu...rchased that year, despite not having anything to attach it to until the next year, when the first fire chief, Mr. Jacob Pius Frink, was hired. Chief Fink acquired access to the CPR water network, including two fire hydrants on Baker Street. However, Fink resigned just two years later due to community apathy and lack of volunteers, equipment, and training. It wasn’t until 1904, when Cranbrook became a city, that the city’s renewed attempts at starting a functional fire brigade were finally successful. Firemen were hired and received equipment and training, and at last a proper fire hall was built. photo credit Carly Lyn CBK 1976.038.184 #throwbackthursday #thenandnow #tbt
