Today, October 4, we honour the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and gender diverse people. Violence against First Nations, Métis, and Inui...t women, girls, and two-spirit persons must end. And the federal government must stop delaying, and deliver its long-overdue national action plan to address the Calls for Justice from the National Inquiry. See more

Dear Minister Fleming, Please stop showing the TV ads featuring Dr. Bonnie in a classroom that in no way reflects actual learning conditions in our schools. It ...angers me every time it airs and is only serving to seriously undermine Dr. Henry’s credibility in the eyes of teachers around the province. Please stop referring to learning cohorts as though there were an underlying pedagogical reason for them. It’s clear to everyone directly affected that their purpose is for contact tracing in the event of an exposure in schools. In reality, our classrooms with 30 desks, 30 students, a teacher’s desk, a teacher and an educational assistant look much more crowded. Rows of forward-facing desks also make it look like we’ve travelled back in time to an era when students were not encouraged to collaborate, cooperate and actively engage in their learning, but rather sit quietly filling in worksheets while the teacher lectures at them. The ad does not show the recycling bin overflowing with paper towels by lunch time, the garbage can with non-recyclable disinfecting wipes and disposable masks, and the tiny hands that are already showing signs of skin irritation. Students at my school are delightful and most are excited to be back with friends and classmates in a structured environment. Teachers are happy to be back doing what we love and will work hard to fill in the inevitable gaps in learning that have occurred while we were away. However, this is going to take some skilful planning, given the fact that so much instructional time is now being spent on the important protocols to keep everyone safe and healthy, rather than learning to read, do math, create art and explore science in hand-on activities. This health and safety time could be reduced if there were fewer students in class, but your government has chosen not to allow this to happen. The expectation that schools fully open on September 8th, followed by your refusal to consider online or hybrid learning options makes it seem as though you have no appreciation of just how complex a public education system is. Your delay in making crucial decisions about the additional funds needed to support our students, and the lack of clear, timely communications with all stakeholders have placed unnecessary stresses on many of our staff and students.
