We have seen political division, global pandemic, natural disasters, and economic downturn in 2020, and the news and social media remind us every day the dark r...ealities of this world. In this first Wycliffe blog post of 2021, Principal Bishop Stephen Andrews describes baptism as "an act of defiance" against the dominion of darkness, and Christ is the light of this world, still, everyday. Looking for something to read? Marcus Minucius Felix was one of the earliest Latin apologists, and his "Octavius," one of the earliest defenses of Christianity against paganism. Its an insightful window into the early and ancient Christian mind.

17 - . & Almighty and everlasting God, you kindled the flame of your love in the heart of your servant S...t. Archbishop William Temple is honored in the Anglican Communion, November 6, the anniversary of his death in 1944. He was the last primate of Britain to die in o...ffice. Also, William Temple is the only archbishop of Canterbury whose father (Frederick Temple) was another archbishop of Canterbury. Although he came from an upper-class background, William Temple joined to the British Labour Party in 1918 to support of the working classes in their quest for economic and social reforms. He earned special fame for his book Christianity and Social Order (1942), which set out an Anglican social theology. Archbishop Temple was active in ecumenical affairs. He chaired the second World Conference on Faith and Order in Edinburgh 1937, and his work influenced formation of the British Council of Churches and World Council of Churches. He is also remembered for his efforts to overcome anti-Semitism and other forms of prejudice in Britain. He and Chief Rabbi Joseph Hertz founded the Council of Christians and Jews in 1942. William Temple served as Bishop of Manchester and then, for thirteen years, Archbishop of York. He was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in 1942during the dark days of World War IIand served until his death two years later. He was the first primate of Britain to be cremated, an act that helped legitimize cremation in the minds of Christian people. The urn containing his ashes was placed in Canterbury Cathedral next to his father’s grave. [Image: Archbishop William Temple, Life Magazine, Nov. 1944.]
