In my childhood, I didn't attend a traditional studio studying Ballet, Tap or Jazz. From the age of 4-12, I took only Creative Dance. When I... started attending a Fine Arts school, I noticed my formal dance technique was limited compared to many of my peers. However, what I learned very quickly was that my limited experience in genre specific dance mattered little in terms of catching on and catching up! It certainly didn't impact my ability to perform alongside my more technically savvy peers. You see, what I lacked in technique, I more than made up with in my understanding of dance as a language and my ability to communicate this to an audience. I owe a lot of that to my first Creative Dance experiences with Sally Carline. Sally was the first teacher who influenced my life greatly. I was a very crazy active child. I had trouble focusing unless I was very invested in what was happening around me. I also talked a lot... I know, I know, I was every teachers dream! My parents (also educators) were wise enough to realize a formal ballet program was not going to be the right place for me as a young child. So every Saturday for 8 years, Sally's creative dance classes gave me a space where I could move as much as needed. My self expression was appreciated and nurtured, and I learned I could communicate as much with my body as I did with my mouth. (That was a BIG one for me LOL!) People often have the incorrect assumption that Creative Dance is dancing like a tree, or a flower, in strange pantomime to new age music. That it is without structure.That it is the flaky, floaty cousin to Ballet, Jazz, Modern or Tap. That it is with limited value. This is incredibly INCORRECT! Dance concepts are the foundation for all styles of dance and technique. Masterfully crafted, conceptually-based creative dance is the IDEAL way to introduce young children to the art of dance.
