Whispers of the stars, where my true self was revealed, guided by the truth, a ripened fruit freshly peeled. I’ve spent most of my life drifting. From one place to the next, through passing thoughts, in dreams and on whatever board I can throw under my feet. In perpetual motion we glide through the easy times and climb mountains through the hard times, to gain strength and new perspectives. The human experience is a wild mixture of energy, emotions and decay, and it’s in floating with the current that we are able to fully accept and embrace the ride. One of the aspects of surfing I love most is the patient waiting game between sets. In those moments, I’m aware of both worlds, above and below me, as I delicately balance between the mysterious deep dark ocean reaches, and the magical shifting coastline that ignites my senses. The Mother 15x17" Acrylic on Red Belt Fungi Prints available online and in local stores... This piece was based off my favourite photo: the first human captured shot of Mother Earth taken by the crew of the Apollo 17 on December 7th, 1979. It’s a photograph that shifted the worlds collective consciousness and forever changed the lives of the astronauts that viewed our lonely planet that day. When we open ourselves up to awe, meditation, psychedelics and any movement or practice that brings us back to the moment, we expand ourselves past the mind and ego. For the millions of humans that saw that photo, it was a reminder that something broader, more connected and more complete existed inside them. I found this mature Red Belt Fungi on the Sunshine Coast when I was working as a Forest Tech. Weighing over 15 pounds, I carried it back through the forest in my cruiser vest to the truck a few kilometers away. With a perfect spherical burl on the bottom it took me years of dreaming to finally decide on the Mother Earth piece. The more I travel the globe and search for wisdom, the more I realize that suffering is a state of mind - and the ability to create a home within ourselves amongst constant change is the greatest gift. Reconnecting with Tofino and the West Coast a decade ago and living within this ever-changing environment taught me so much. The locals that welcomed me in gave me a deeper understanding of the connection they share with the land and ocean and how they use that energy to fuel their spiritual journeys. I was deeply inspired by one friend on Vargas Island who thrived alone in this small cabin for many years. It’s this return to simplicity and nature that has always been the best medicine for me since birth. This way of being leads me back to the campfire within, so I can soar high and free above the mists of uncertainty and beyond unhealthy patterns.

So stoked to finally release the "Carrying the Light" series of canvases I painted this Winter in the Kootenays. This Winter was a transformative one, it began with the passing of my grandma, the last elder in my family. As I carried her ashes home to Nelson I felt them turn to embers in my heart as her love washed over me. This canvas was the first piece I painted as quarantine hit, and I dove in with no plan, only emotions. Like the other paintings, it pieces together the pandemics contrasting forces of light/dark, isolation/freedom, clarity/haziness, warmth/cold and love/fear.
